okay, I just got for Christmas, a $75 giftcard to Micro Center and I thought this would be perfect to get started setting up a network. I only want to connect 2 computers to each other and they are not that far away from each other. So my questions are:
1. Do I need a hub?
2. Can the 2 computers be on the internet at the same time at different sites? (each puter has a 56K modem)

All I really want to do is play games against each other and surf the net at the same time the other puter is(but at differnt sites)

Any input is greatly appreciated...thanks

You need to buy two network cards one for each machine, if your only using 2 comps on the network you can get a crossover cable that will let the comps talk WITHOUT a hub :)

So you need:
2 NICS (network cards) 100mbps is better
Crossover CAT5 Cable

then if you add more comps to the network you just get another NIC and a hub, but you must use straight patch cables to connect the comps not xovers. crossover will only work between two comps.... but crossover will work if you connect it to the uplink port of a normal hub or switch.

you can share the internet connection with a proxy server or windows internet connection sharing... try Proxy Plus or analogx from download.com just search there for proxy!!

sorry for all the posts!!

only one comp needs a modem the other just needs a network card the proxy server must be installed on the comp with the modem.

okay so my list is just:
2 10/100 NICs
1 xft crossover CAT5 cable

and download the proxy server
both computers already have modems installed

If I were to make my own cables, would CAT5e cable work?
All I need is a wire crimper, my cousin has testers and other stuff you need.

Also does it matter if I am the computers are running different OSs? I am using WinMe and I want to hook it up to a puter running Win 98.

if your making ur own cabels then make sure to wire then in a crossover manner, not patch. And no it doesnt matter what combination of OS u use.

The OS doesn't matter, i personally would just buy normal crossover cables, because the wiring can be a little tricky, and cables are cheap anyway!!

Id say buy your cable, a GOOD stripper crimper will cost alot of cash...
On the OTness of your CTR, how exactly did you get a RHD JDM CTR <wow thats alot of acronyms...> into this country, and is it certified to be driven on the street?
