I always loved Team Fortress Classic back in the day, and TF2 looks fantastic, however I've read in a few places that the game is somewhat ruined by cheats, that there are precious few servers that arent chock full of cheating 13 year olds.

is this true? I've been thinking of downloading it via steam for a while now but I dont want to waste my cash if I'm not going to have a particularly fun time.

are there any TF2 players here who can allay my fears?

But what I run into more is the smack talk its getting out of hand and don't even get started on the rap music they play threw the headphones. When I hear the rap music I log off the server and it ruins the game for the day.

well that sounds decidedly awful to be honest, I cannot abide people forcing their music on others.... it's getting out of hand over here in the UK with kids sat on the buses with their mobile phone blaring out 50 cent or something else I dont want to listen to.

that's a damn shame really, sounds like a case of the many ruining it for the few..... I think I'll give it a miss :(

another good server with admins always on, no d-bags either, all good team players, no cheaters either..

http://doormanisgod.com/

ive been playing since... jan '08, only seen liek maybe 2-3 cheaters ever, which were quickly dismissed from the servers:)

Doorman is an ok server, I prefer Jedi Forces' server though. Let's see, 69.28.221.57:27015 should do it. It's a 30 person server, strict no swearing/spamming/cheating/etc rules, most nights it's pretty full. Good mix of skilled and less-skilled people. I gladly pay 5 bucks a month for a reserved slot there.

Give it a try, I don't think you will be disappointed. I have only run into 1 cheater that has really affected the game, but I just made it my goal to kill him...which I did. If you are on a server with tools there is an easy fix, change server.

Yep.
Just find a few favorites and you're all set.

Off the top of my head:
voogru
SourceOP
Stompfest Chicago
Jedi something or another

Haven't run into a single cheater yet, only random exploiters that get banned in a few minutes on the servers I play at (Hardfought). The game really is a lot of fun, I enjoy it more than the classic. Though you don't have grenades on all classes, so you can't concussion jump across maps. :P

I haven't seen any cheaters yet either, and I've been playing for quite a while, and I've only seen one exploiter on Badlands who got kicked pretty damn fast. I also don't see many people playing music through their mic, and the server I frequent has music but people ask for it.

OK, a couple of things from a guy that plays way too much TF2.

There is no PB like Derek mentioned, they use V.A.C. or Valve anti cheat. It isn't perfect, but it seems to work, the game is not flooded with cheats.

The people who flood voice chat with crap music are also few and far between. Like any game, a competent admin will ban them on the spot. If there are no admins around, you simply hit esc, go to 'mute players', and you mute them. It is soooo simple, I find that the people who complain about voice spammers are MORE annoying than the spammer. 5 ppl telling 1 guy to 'STFU' over and over and over...JUST MUTE HIM FFS!

Anyhow, to miss out on TF2 would be a shame IMO. By far my fav game right now and since the beta. We've got a steam group for OCF (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ocf). Get the game and join up. ;)

I think most TF2 players are unaware that they can mute.

All games have their cheaters and crap tlakers and such

if you dont want to listen to someone using voice and playing music, turn off voice.

as other said, it is simply a matter of finding good servers with admins that kick 13 year old hackers and people who play music over their mic as if they are some 133t punks,

Don't tell me, tell the people who constantly ask how to mute people in-game.

In the 2 situations where I've wanted to mute a mic-spammer, I've done it.. And it kept coming through. Yes, I did it right, it just didn't actually mute them.

Yeah...I've seen quite a few caught by the hit F10 to mute noob trap.

The real way to mute people is hit the + key 3 times, then type ATH and hit enter.

I think there used to be a bug where it would only mute once the spammer stopped spamming for a second. If he never stopped (like he played a 10min german techno song), then he wouldn't get muted. I think it's fixed now, mute works for me when I need it.

Most accounts of cheating in PC games (at least those that use VAC or Punkbuster) are over-exaggerated. A lot of people don't know how to identify a cheater and just accuse anyone who is good of cheating. I've only run into a handful of cheaters in all my years of online gamers.

I've only seen 1 or 2 cheaters in countless hours of TF2 on countless servers. Valve is pretty good about fixing map exploits and combating cheats.

Well some one who can shoot threw walls in tf2 ( is cheeting ) someone who doesn't die after 3 rockets hit them contently is cheating, Someone who can use the red dot spy dot thats not a spy is cheating "Its easy to tell"

thanks for the responses guys, I was terrified at first, but I think there are enough decent people playing the game to be able to find a few decent servers. I'll be downloading it later on today, how does steam work in that respect? if I pay to download it and my computer subsequently explodes, will steam remember that I bought it so I wont have to pay for it again? I'll be burning it to DVD (providing that's allowed) just in case, but I wanted to make sure.

However I think ocf is a better tech support for the steam accounts and processes then steam them selfs since a lot of people had and will have similar issues.

All of those things can easily appear to happen in a game but people are not actually cheating. For example, you can appear to be shot through a wall, but the unlag feature of the source engine allows for people with higher pings to have a chance by having their shots still hit you if they can still see you on their screen, even if it appears that you have moved behind a wall on your screen. (Does that make sense?). Also, saying someone cheats because three rockets don't kill them isn't accurate either. There are many situations where it may seem like you should have killed someone but you don't. They could have a medic you didn't see. They could have stepped over a health pack right as it spawned, or of course, back to lag or just some faulty hit detection.

I'm not saying people don't cheat. All I'm saying is don't jump to conclusions, things happen in games, especially when lag is a factor.

i have loaded clips into people and people clips into me and not died - lag spikes.

shooting through walls as in a clear concrete wall? as alot of source games you can shoot through the first 1ft of a wall and hit someone easily.. also dont forget about how the system works, what you see, may not be where the other player is, since the new source engine valve tries to make it so even epople with lag, can kill, so you may be past the wall on your computer, but for that lager, you are still open and they shoot and you die, personally i hate it.

it is easy to spot cheaters, but as said, i have logged alot of hours in online FPS and seen a handful of hackers vs what every makes it out to be, %90 of the time, the person is simply crying cause they keep getting beaten by someone so they canty admit they may suck or someone is better then them, so they cry "hacker hacker"

You CANNOT shoot through walls in TF2, it is NOT possible. It isn't CS:S. ;)

There are NO HEALTH cheats, so someone who is cheating cannot have unlimited life. What you described is not a cheat, like already said, they were probably being 'buffed' by a medic to have 150% health.

A red dot as a spy? I don't know what you mean. They only 'red dot' that would appear would be if you are a red sniper, your gun puts a dot on the wall where you aim.

Now, on to the REAL cheats. There are AIMBOTS! Oh Noes! It's a good thing that they only class that an aimbot helps in this game is the sniper, and they are obvious. I play sniper almost exclusively, and I rarely get accused, so they cannot be that common.

There are also speedhacks! Again, VERY obvious if a Heavy is beating scouts to the center cap.

There are wallhacks. And THIS is really the only hack you should worry about. First of all, wallhacking is EASY to do, apparently you only have to edit your skins (and this is VAC legal, so you don't get banned). If you are good at TF2, somone wallhacking usually doesn't stand a chance anyways. This isn't CS where a wallhack can totally turn the tides against you. It is way too fast paced. Have I run into TONS of wallhackers? I have no idea...if so, they seem to die just as readily as any clean player. :D

One thing to clear up before someone asks, there are NO hacks that will make a totally invisible spy visible. When you cloak as a spy, your model is actually not drawn at all, so if you get headshotted while invisible, you were just unlucky, the guy saw you just as you cloaked, or his in game name happened to be "T|A Richard Ramirez". ;)

OP or anyone, if you wanna talk TF2 or play a few games, add me on steam under 'richardramirez'. I'm always on, if I'm home I'll respond. :)

the only type of "exploit" ive seen so far was medic boosts

are these still doable?

No they took it out. :(

I'd say that was an exploit like strafe jumping was in Q3. They should have legitimized it and kept it in IMO. It took teamwork and skill. Boosting someone to a high place (B roof in gravelpit) was not very easy. Another medic trick used to be 'uber pausing'. You could pause your uber by switching weapons, allowing you to 'juggle' a few teammates at once. You still only got 10 seconds worth of uber, so I thought it was a cool trick. They took that out too.

Honestly, they have dumbed down the game a few times over the months. They have fixed a lot of bad exploits, but they also took out a couple things that I felt added a lot to the game. Overall, still highly enjoyable, pretty much the only thing I play lately.
