View Full Version : Overnight lock and 93% mem usage related?

Since I boosted the 866 machine in my sig back up to 1105, I've had 2 or 3 overnight locks in the last week. Last night I though I had caught it before it screwed up.

I was laying awake at 2am when I heard the Windows critical stop sound (I leave my speakers on). Turned on the monitor and jiggled the mouse. Normal screen pops up except that my Maxmem icon is showing my memory usage at 93%! I have 768M installed! I did a manual aggressive cleaning and it dropped back down to normal 30-40% usage.

This morning, the system was still frozen. I can tell the general time by looking at my SETI logs and current CPU time, and this one happened around 9am. Most of the locks have been very near 1 or 2am. I'm guessing the memory usage problem is what's causing it, but I'm open to other suggestions. Also, whether it is the memory problem or not, what's using up so much resources after I leave it for the night?

Normal tray programs are:
Volume control
Norton Internet Sweep
Norton Smart Sweep
Norton AV Autoprotect
Maxmem
SETI Spy
SETI Driver
ZoneAlarm
and ICS

I have a sneaking suspicion that Norton is eating my RAM when it thinks I'm not watching. :)

I've seen a lot of complaints recently about Norton. It's possible that it has a memory leak.

Try disabling that for a night, and see if you get the same error.
