View Full Version : Making a 260 overheat could be tougher than you think...

Ive been running mine for about 3 hours now, wrapped in a thick wool heating blanket. Seriously, IT IS HOT. I put my hand inside and it gets too hot for me to keep in there.
Ill update with pics soon :)

Sorry, I'm not exactly sure WHY you would try to cook your 360.

a 260? you pop the radiator hose off and you should be able to over heat it

Yea, meant to say 360 in the title, and went to edit it but it wont change now :(

Anyway. Im trying to overheat my 360 so I can get the red ring and have MS give me a new(or refurb one, as long as it works) one. Some might say its immoral, but 2 days(no lie, 2 days) after my warranty is up my unit stops reading discs. MS tells me Im SOL pretty much. They can fix it for some insane price if I want to mail it to them. GameStop tells me too bad on the extra 2 days out of warranty. Nobody has a solution except to pay an assload of money to get it fixed.
So now Im forced to take things into my own hands. Immoral? I care not. Releasing a faulty system when they knew damn well it was faulty is immoral.
BTW, this is my 3rd 360 to die. I just overnighted one from Thideras(thanks buddy). Its a newer Elite.

3rd one to die...and another on the way...I wonder why MS still sells them.

Seriously, I'm not gonna say whether I think what you are doing is right or wrong, because if I was in your shoes I might be tempted to do the same thing. But I would never be in your shoes, because after the first one died, I would say "F-U" xbox, never again. But maybe that's me.

If the issue is that some of the poor soldered connections have broken, this might work.

If the issue is a warping of the lense due to overheating, it will not.

But hey, what've you got to lose? (That is unless it starts a fire... in which case... aw nevermind.)

Aim a hair dryer at full blast toward the exhaust fan as well. :D

put it in a plastic bag and tie it. Don't let them see its been tempered with. Eh I wonder if the mods will get this thread... probably...

Stick it in the oven.

Irony at it's best, try and force a red ring and it won't do it under extreme circumstances.

Play Dead Rising WHILE it's in the oven.

I have a hard time believing that this thread is allowed here.

Note, I am honestly not passing judgment, I think MS selling millions of defective units is deplorable, and I have no personal issues with people 'sticking' it to them. But this type of thread could get these forums in trouble.

why wouldnt it be allowed?

OH WAIT is it considered modifing your console?

i think that stuff is a crock of ****, my thread of getting my saturn to play import games got deleted. any one with half a ****in mind should be able to figure out its selected by a set of jumpers in which no way attributes the the console in its ability to play pirated games, not only is it a dead system (not supported) but....

PLAYING IMPORTS IS NOT ILLEGAL!

not directed at you oni this was a thread in the volt mod/circuitry section, i was trying to figure a better way of doing a single switch from US to JPN only

Niku-Sama.....Maybe thats something you should Direct to a Mod via PM. and let him know your stance on it, and why you think your thread should not have been closed. But then again, the topic at hand isn't always the reason a thread gets closed. Sometime the discussion of the other members can cause a thread to get closed.

either way, its not fair to thread-jack someone elses thread. Especially if you think their thread should be closed. Because that just makes 2 wrongs.

Back to topic at hand..

honestly...i'm not going to say anything against what the OP is doing. HONESTLY, i wish i hadn't opened my 360 a long while back, or i would do this myself. ( i opened it, and put AS5 on the heatsinks. This was BEFORE the news of the extended warranty due to RROD, And i had bought the console used from a friend, so the regular warranty was already dead ). Because my Disc drive is giving me Disc Read errors now.

Its not fair that microsoft will replace/repair a 360 due a RROD due to heating problems, but not replace/repair a 360 due to Disc drive problems that happens to a lot of 1st gen consoles.

When my last one died (GPU death) I attempted to RROD mine and never could get it to..... MS repaired it anyway even though there was no RROD and I went out and bought a new HDMI model then traded the repaired one on a PSP when I got it back...

FYI: I had made a thread saying I was going to do the same thing as you and got yelled at by a mod....

After reading up about the RROD, I realize that it might be easier to just shake the hell out of it until it stops working.

RROD comes from ANY hw failure ?

How much are they charging for a DVD drive replacement?

I had a 7800gs video card that wouldn't kick into 3d mode unless the core was above a certain temp. I tested using a hair dryer on it from two feet away. That got he temp up pretty high. I can't imagine what a full blast dryer would do at point blank!

Is a 260 one of those street vendor in Hong Kong knock offs?

Sooo....why was this rant directed at me? It isn't considered modifying a console...it is baking it for the purpose of getting a warranty (that MS should have ponied up in the first place).

Its not "baking" yet, but if things dont start going my way it soon will be.

No, when my DVD drive died there was no RROD, when my GPU died there was no RROD. Mine died 2x and there was NEVER a RROD except that one time the video cable was not seated properly.

Surprised this isn't locked yet. You see threads being closed and people being yelled at for ripping off hardware companies when they RMA a card they killed, but its ok to RMA an xbox that you killed? I'm not trying to pass judgement here, but I imagine a Mod will.

There has to be some justice for the consumer though. This problem is much larger than any single PlayStation console had with their ****ty lasers. There was no way to twist Sony's arm into making reprocussions. MS has admitted their units are flawed and offered to make things right on the condition that it overheats. Great for those with the overheating issues but there are a GREAT number of people who are experiencing failed DVD drives and GPUs. Should they be forced to wait until MS owns up to those issues, IF they ever do?? HELL NO, I say!!! Overheat the damned thing and make them fix their ****box360. He paid enough money for it!

I'm not condoning or advocating what he's doing, I'm just saying that we can't all play goodie-goodie. When corporate America kicks us and gives us a RARE opportunity to kick back, we need to take it...

The xbox 360 sounds like a product ripe for a class action lawsuit. I may be out of the loop and maybe somebody already has but it seems like nobody ever files any kind of class action lawsuit against Microsoft for their bug-riddled, failure-prone products. Just wait for the next version/revision, they've trained us well. :p

+1, If someone was saying they took the heat sink off a video card to get a new one then I'm sure the mods would lock it or delete it.

Like I said, I got yelled at for SUGGESTING that I do the same to mine when it happened to me. Turns out that I call MS and escalate my issue to a supervisor and they agreed to repair the system FREE of charge when the GPU died on me (2nd repair). The 1st repair, (the dead DVD drive) I had to pay $35 S&H but like a year later they refunded that via cheque. Note I NEVER had the RROD.
