View Full Version : Prob With Pci/usbports Pls Help?
Have just bought HP 215 digital camera but found I can't upload pictures as i have noUSB ports on my computer. I've installed a PCI card with two USB port into one of the slots, when i switched the comp on its loaded the drivers for the USB ports but when I plugged the camera in the software can't find the camera.
I've tried changing slots but the same occurs.
I've bought a CF cardreader but the occurs with this.
My mobo (an FIC VA-503+) has an optional USB riser plug on it(Idont have the riser to attach to it). To activate this I need to change the settings in the BIOS. once I have changed the settings the computer loads a second set of drivers alongside the first set both sets of drivers appear to be working and do not conflict with each other but still cannot find the camera or card reader.
When I click on 'properties' - 'disable in this hardware profile' I lose my sound card aswell and get the message 'suondcard already in use' or 'being used by another program' or something like that
IRQsetting for both USB riser and PCI/USB card is IRQ12
sound card may also be using IRQ12(in device manager it says it is using IRQ5 and 11)
How can I get my PCI/USB port to work correctly?
Can anyone help?
PS, I dont really know what I'm doing.

wow....ok first of. you've verified the sound card is not on the same IRQ, how about the DMA address.
What OS are you using, and does the card say it's compatable with that OS? (hope it's not ME.....it doesn't play nice with USB)
Have you been to the mfg's web site to look for newer drivers?

Also check which PCI slots your cards are installed. Sometimes installing them in in a certain order can clear up a lot of problems. Mine are usually installed in the following order.
AGP : Video card (well jeez, i wonder why...)
PCI #1 : Nothing or Video card, or tv tuner/ dvd decoder card.
PCI #2 : Modem
PCI #3 : Network card
PCI #4 : Soundcard
PCI #5 : USB, Parallel port, or other.
If I you don't have one of the components, you just bump the remaining cards up one slot. I've found that this order works best with most motherboards, with the least amount of (if any at all) IRQ sharing.
Well, a while back, my modem was giving me trouble, and that was the only card I had in there besides the AGP. Well, it turns out that it would not work because I had overclocked my cpu...weird, huh? Maybe because of the fsb?
Well, it works now because I am not overclocked
My setup is a little different:
AGP:video
PCI#1:TV Tuner
PCI#2: sound card
PCI#3:modem
PCI#4:planning to put NIC
PCI#5:nothing yet
PCI#6:nothing yet
CNR:nothing yet
WTF? How did that smiley get there?
Whatever, you know what I tried to say.

I have a Logitech joystick that has a game controller to USB adapter. It used to work, but at some point, (I don't know when) the adapter stopped working. I usually had it plugged into the game port. When I put another computer together, I couldn't understand why the USB ports didn't work. I spent a lot of hours trying to find the problem. I finally managed to borrow another USB device, which worked perfectly! So try your camera in a friends computer if you can, or try another USB device in yours. There is a site called USB man that has many tips and kinks to drivers sites. There is a patch for 98SE which might help if that is what you're using. Do a Google search for the site. And good luck!
sorry I ve been a while getting back.
Anyway my current setup is
AGP slot; AGP card(ATI 8mb AGP card)
PCI#1; PCI/USB card
PCI#2; MODEM card(ESS ES56T-PI)
PCI#3; Empty slot
ISA#1; Empty slot
ISA#2; Empty slot
ISA#3; Sound card(aztech mmpro16aII)runs on old win95
drivers
I am currently running on windows 98 SE hope this is the extra info you require to help me out
DMA adress ??? dont know what this is or how I find out. like I said before I dont reaaly know what I'm doing!!!!

Do you have a Via chipset on your motherboard, or are the chips on the usb card made by VIA? They have known USB issues. Check viaarena.com for fixes/patches, but be warned that they're 90% likely not to work.
Go into Control panel\system\device manager\
Look for anything USB. Click on it and check it's properties. Examine the drivers and try to update them. Examine the resources tab and find out if the usb stuff is sharing an IRQ with any other device.
Jot this stuff and post it for us!
:D Thanks a lot to Arkaime 23 for the last posting on this thread and to everyone else of course
I do have VIA chipset on my motherboard and this seems to be the root of my problems .........Although not all of them I fear!!
My system set up reads like this;
FIC VA-503+ motherboard
VIA APOLLO MVP3 Chipset
AMD K6-2-350MHz Processor
128MB RAM on DIMM1 - DIMM2(empty)
ATI RAGE IIC 8MB AGP graphics card
GENERIC USB/PCI CARD --PCI Slot1
ESS ES56TPI MODEM --PCI Slot 2
PCI Slot 3---empty
ISA Slot 1---empty
ISA Slot 2---empty
ISA Slot 3 --AZTECH MM PRO 16 IIA-3D FP --Soundcard

I am currently running WIN98 SE and have just installed the plus pack. I have 2 disk drives
No1 C: 8.4GIG
No2 D: 1.6GIG
10x speed CD ROM
3 1/2'' floppy
I went to the VIA website and downloaded the 4 in 1 drivers and the USB patch. Once I had done that I uninstalled my cardreader and my digital camera software,I then installed the 4 in 1 drivers and then the USB patch, then restarted my system. System woldnt restart so I started in safe mode, uninstalled both sets of drivers, restarted and re-installed after disconnecting cardreader, restarted again everything started up but it seemed to take longer. I then installed the cardreader software restarted again connected cardreader to USB port, clicked on 'MY COMPUTER' and there it was 'removeable drive F:' WAHEY AWAY WE GO!!!!...... Ive now done the same with the camera software and this works also so brilliant thanks for all the help
Now to the Almost anyway bit of my problem
While I was rebooting my system during the above process the computer keeps freezing on the welcome screen before the password window appears. Ive found that if I disconnect my cardreader at this point startup then carries on as normal, the other problem is if I remove the CF card from the cardreader while it is connected to the USB port my whole system totally freezes up and I have to 'CTRL+ALT+DEL to close down all systems and restart I think its something to do with shared IRQ settings but I'm not sure here's the list. Any ideas anybody???
