I've heard it is highly recommended that the HR-03GT be run with a fan. I know the AC Accelero S1rev2 may be run passively. So what I am wondering is if the HR-03 temps are also fairly low when fanless (ram etc as well).
I'm looking for silence, so getting rid of the stock 8800GT fan is the main reason I am buying this thing rather than overclocking the card. I don't have many case fans either: a 120mm slipstream exhaust, psu exhaust, CPU HSF, and a 120mm intake that I turn on when gaming/loading.
Perhaps I could strap a 92mm fan to it and only turn it on when I am gaming/loading the card? That might obstruct passive flow though.
Bottom line, does this cooler perform as well as the Accelero when they are both run passive?... as you know the Accelero is out of stock almost everywhere :)

im sure you could run it passive... IKIKUINTHENUTZ runs his ati 3870 xfire setup with a HR-03GT's and the upper card has the HS sandwiched between the 2 and he loads at 70*C fully passive. What might work very well is having a negative case pressure and putting pci slot covers on all but the 2 slots below the gfx card... so air gets pulled in through thoes across the HR-03GT
the lower card in this pic loads at 70*C without a fan at all. and that hs is pretty burried in there

I'm sure it'll run passive, but I'd have to at least put a dead-silent fan on it. I'm sure you can get a fan that you won't be able to hear above the rest of your rig. Just a little air movement makes a big difference.

i kikuinthenutz... says an HR-09 TYPE 3 fits PERFECTLY on an ati 3870... the one shown is a TYPE 1 thats too long so stock pcb holes could not be used.

Yeah that bottom card does look a little jammed in there. My card right now idles at about 58*C and loads in the 70's so by the sounds of it I wouldn't be getting any hotter than the stock setup. The only issue is getting air moving by the ram, I can certainly open two pci clots below the card hoping that would be sufficient. But it looks like ikikuinthenutz as a little more air flow going through his case than I will on mine.
I would really prefer only having a fan running on this thing when I am loading the card.
I also wouldn't mind mounting the cooler pointing up to keep my slots available for sli or a soundcard, and I dont think I could even fit a mounted fan as it would run into my CPU HSF.
