View Full Version : Can my Silverstone ST56ZF run a quad-core?

I'm thinking of upgrading my CPU/MB/RAM combo... I just bought an 8800GTX, and I'm pretty sure my Opty 165 is going to be a bottleneck.

So I'm considering what I can do to upgrade, and unfortunately, I don't think any Socket 939 processor is going to let me use this card to anything near it's best performance (correct me if I'm wrong, PLEASE).

So I'm wondering about upgrading, but if I've got to get a new 750W PSU, I doubt it's going to happen. If I can run a nice setup off my Silverstone, then I might do it... money is the biggest issue.

I've currently got about $220 in PayPal, and can maybe swing another $100 or so in a few days to a week. But if this upgrade's gonna cost me $500, I think I'm gonna just have to stick with what I've got. :(

Suggestions? My ST56ZF does about 38A on the solo +12V rail.

So.... any ideas?

I bet it can. My DA750 with 60A on the +12v powered an overclocked Wolfdale and two heavily overclocked HD2900XTs, plus a whole array of fans, and a 7200.11.

Check my sig ;)

It runs warm when I put the system under full load, but it sure as hell runs it stable!

ACID RAIN, that's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!

Of course... now I've got to come up with another couple of hundred dollars... anyone wanna pay top-dollar for a gently-OC'd Opty 165 and DFI Ultra-D? :D Oh, and a set of OCZ DDR400, too! :p

Thanks for the tips, guys!

If I hadn't just bought a new case, I might be interested for my HTPC. I just depleted my fun-money funds though :(

TR,

That Zeus is about as rugged as they come and first class. Not even close to an overload with your present system or a quad core upgrade. Before you upgrade to the Intel, run it for a while with your vid card. You may be surprised with the performance of that Opteron and they overclock very nicely.

No - the 520W and 650W are Enhance, and the 1200W is Impervio.

You can't sell out of the classfields.

Yes, sorry, I wasn't trying to post it here... was just making a joke about someone paying me way more than what it's worth.

I'm on my way to Classies right now to put dibs on a Q6600, then go looking for a new MB and RAM.

Thanks for the help, folks, I hope to be BLAZING on my new Intel (GASP!) Quad in a week or so. :D
