how big of a lan are you talking about?

that switch is made for 100+ people

all you need is a 10/100 hub..those are much cheaper and you wouldnt tell the difference in performance

i dont want a hub, i have a friend who has a 16 port hub and his is slow as hell when we fill it up. and im getting 24 people, lol. and i want a switch so it wont slow down much when its full.
woudl that one serve my purposes?

well if u want full performance, then i would highly suggest a router instead. Its basically a smart switch. :D

well where can i find a 24port router thats not too terribly expensive?

is it going to be on the internet?

when I host 20 person lans I use a 4 port router and connect 3 four port hubs and 1 8 port hub to each port on the router

I think where it is getting slow is because some people only have a 10meg eithernet card instead of a 100meg one

anyways we mostly play CS and everyone pings less thin 7 with that config so it will work

just make sure all the hubs/routers are 10/100

PS: that switch would work just fine but I have found that its easyer with small hubs sence you can run the small hubs to different rooms so people wont run out of cord

not gonna be on the internet. and im holding it at a friends house. he has 2 huge rooms that we are going to set up tables in for all the computers and i just recently bought a 1,000' roll of cat5 cable with crimper and a bunch of plugs so we can make our own cable on the spot if the ones people bring arent long enough

and this lan party is NOT GOING TO HAVE CS, yes you hear right, rtcw all the way hehe.
*runs off to ebay to buy switch*

well as my lan parties are usually i connect the the net i just use a router and then a switch to connect extra computers... But since this only gonna be lan, a switch/hub combo would work just fine as warlord described. :D

Unless you're referring to a Cable/DSL Router/Switch, This is not correct. For a local, LAN Game where the server and players all reside in one room a 10/100 switch will work perfectly. A switch is device that is "smart". It has it's own cpu and instructions.

Routers are for connections out to the internet and routing information on WAN's (Wide Area Networks) Linksys has kind-of abused the term "router". Cable/DSL Router/Switches, take the single incomming ip address from the provider and then spoof fake, internal address' for the PC's connected to the switch. It then "routes" information between the outside address and "inside" address. Not really true routing but a basic component.

The switch on ebay is IMHO a fairly good product. TigerSwitch was purchased by Cabletron Systems (now known as Enterasys) about 4 or 5 years ago. They relabeled the boxes for a while and then integrated some of the features into new product lines.

If the price is right...go for it!

Congrats! If everything is in working order I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

You will have to assign an IP address and subnet mask to each machine, including the dedicated server, that wants to see the LAN game.

A suggested setup...(Subnet mask is the same on all machines):

Subnet = 255.255.0.0
IP 1 = 10.1.1.1
IP 2 = 10.1.1.2
IP 3 = 10.1.1.3
...and so on. It's LAN Party time! :D

You should have an icon off the start menu that says "Network Places" or "My Network Places". You can also get to the network window from the control panel. Right click on the icon and select "Properties".

There should be a tab or window for TCP/IP properties. ..sorry if my details are sketchy..I don't have an XP box running currently..been a few months. :)
