so im trying to install fahmon on my machine to keep track of my folding. im on ubuntu 7.10. running into some problems. i keep getting this error when i run ./configure
checking for wx-config... no
configure: error:
wxWidgets must be installed on your system.
Please check that wx-config is in path, the directory
where wxWidgets libraries are installed (returned by
'wx-config --libs' or 'wx-config --static --libs' command)
is in LD_LIBRARY_PATH or equivalent variable and
wxWidgets version is 2.8.0 or above.
google search turned up a few results but no one has answered on what to do when wx-config isnt even installed, not just the wrong version.
sudo apt-get install wx-config finds nothing, and the package manager doesnt return anything for wx-config either. how do i get this resolved?
also can fahmon track the progress and stuff of remote machines? i have about 10 machines running that i would like to keep tabs on without having to go to each individual one and mess with them. counting the 2 virtual machines, i have 5 on the same local network, 2 in the same apt on a different network, 1 in another apt, and 2 in another state lol.
any help is greatly appreciated :)

ok i got the main problem figured out. i needed the development version of the wxWidgets libs and stuff. now what i want to know is how to monitor remote clients on other computers and/or virtual machines.
also, does fahmon not realtime update? like ill have the window open and it will say the progess is say 10%, but when the client moves to 11%, fahmon doesnt update, but if i close it and restart it has the correct info.

ok, fahmon is installed and i can successfully track my progress on 4 of my foldings so far. the 2 VM SMP folders, 1 nonSMP (picking up the leftovers from the 2 VMs :)) and my HTPC machine. these 2 machines are my q6600 box and my 1.8GHz celeron box. they both run ubuntu and they are both on the same network. getting the VMs and the HTPC to show up in Fahmon was as easy as sharing/mounting the /fold directory over an NFS fileshare. i think i can do something similar for the windows machines on my network, but what about the rest of the machines which are over the internet? how can i still monitor them?
FahMon checks the status of the rigs every time it starts. After that, you select how often you want FahMon to check the status in FahMon >> Preferences >> Monitoring options. Default is 5 minute intervals.
Since I literally "Fold @ Home", I'll have to pass on your last question. I'm impressed with your work on this, gsrcrxsi.

thanks, although google should take the credit haha. ive been using linux full time for a couple months now and im getting the hang of it. im still a n00b to it though.
progress report: i got the windows laptops (on my network) recognized my fahmon by mounting the directories with samba.
here's where im at so far
Wow! New member, already has Samba set up, and folding away like mad!!
If I was impressed before, I'm REALLY impressed, now!

thanks lol, still not sure what to do about the machines that are over the internet. suggestions? i want a safe/secure method. im not too worried about my machine getting hacked (linux) but a couple of the machines ill be connecting to will be windows and i dont want them to be at risk.
I like logmein (logmein.com), and it's free, so that may be an option to consider.

hmm looking at logmein, does that allow you to mount directories over the internet? or do you have to use the web browser to do it? if its through the browser, FahMon cant really real-time check it, which is what im trying to do.

I tried something like this a long time ago with SETI@Home and in Windows. I never got it to work but I was also using a ton of shareware and limited function programs to try and get the job done.
Maybe you can set up an FTP server on the machine you want to monitor then try to mount/link that FTP folder to a real folder on the local machine and point fahmon to that folder. The FTP server can be password protected and possibly encrypted so security should not be an issue.
I have never set up an FTP server in Linux so sorry can't help there.

interestingly enough, ive thought about FTP. ive also thought about VPN, but im not exactl sure how a VPN works, ill have to do a littl emore research

VPN is (if I get my terms right) where you log into a secure intranet as if you were a machine on that intranet.
For example, I can connect to the internet at home, VPN into the University network and use resources (Crossfire Commander, Scifinder, SMTP Server, NMR Data) that would normally only be accessible to machines on that intranet.
Not sure how you set one up, but cisco do a VPN client that I use (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/secursw/ps2308/). I get this free via my University so I don't know what the free options are. Sourceforge may turn up something?

i was talking with a friend of mine yesterday, he says VPN is an option, but very hard to setup. he suggested i just do scp (secure copy) i can copy the files over.and i can set it up as a cron job so that it updates every 5 mins or so. i think im gonna give that a shot :)
