I start mine up at about 6 in the morning and shu it off at about midnight.
Mine is the computer that is never off. No reason to turn it off. They're not that expensive to run 24/7. Myself and my two roommates run all three of our rigs 24/7.

24/7 X about 7-9 all crunching SETI@HOME as they should. Why cuz I don't pay an electric bill
i turn mine off when i will not be using it until several hours later, but if i am downloading a large file i will leave it on at days at a time if need be, so i voted depends.

Thanks!
I don't worry about that one as much as the client not being able to contact the server. I find that I only get errors when I do something (ie not when I leave it folding for the weekend).

24/7, no way! Power is often going out--snowstorms, thunderstorms, windstorms, squirrels, women drivers...
After one house fire, I care not for a replay. Besides, it's not very energy efficient, unless you need a noisy space heater next to your bed. :)

How can you guys run them 24/7? Are you on Windows? I'm not sure about XP, but Windows 9x isn't very good memory management. If I leave my comp on for 6-10hours, then it starts lagging. Does this happen to you if you leave it on too long?

Make a fixed swap file of x2 of ur memory capacity, & ur comp won't be lagging..

I run Win2K, WinNT 4.0, Win98se and Redhat Linux 7.2.
The only pcs that needs to be rebooted are the ones with 98- once a week: makes a big difference if you just leave a program (SETI@Home) running, and don't do anything else with it.
I would expect that WinXP's performance to be about the same as 2000's, but don't have it, not getting it, so I don't know for sure.

Yeah, I'm getting Linux (which is good memory management :D) so I'll probably be on that a lot and leave the comp running. Won't deplete (sp?) my memory sources like Windows.

ive got all four of mine runnig 24/7 and folding with Win98SE and havent had any problems........yet.
On 24/7/365 (execept for leap years and testing new PC boards. :) )
98SE, 500Mhz, 128Mb Ram, True Color, MSN Messneger is allways on.
When it begins to lag, just exit Internet Explorer, refresh desktop, and make sure that your screen saver uses low memory or just don't bother having one, Del the win/temp items, defrag, scan disk, and experiment with RUN/MSConfig. do this once a week and your PC will never lag.
and what's the big deal about folding?

Folding is similar to SETI@Home: you run a client on your local pc and download units of work, process them and send them back.
Here at OC.Com we have teams doing both, look in Distributed Computing for their forums.
Links:Overclockers.Com Seti Team (http://www.ocsetiteam.com)
Overclockers.Com Folding Team (http://www.overclockers.ws/)
Both teams are always looking for new members!
I really must check out what folding & seti is.

On 24/7 x3 folding using Kvm switch and router. Like Flounder my biggest fear is one of the comps, not on the monitor, failing, causing a loss of time.
I found a free proggy called Winrambooster that I use to clear memory leaks that seem to develop over time. I believe the problem is the sdram because my rambus and ddr machines don't have the won't release memory prob.
web server comp is on 24/7 with Windows 2000 Server and my workstation comp (winxp) gets shut down occasionally. Id like to add that the server has been known to run for 2 months straight without a single glitch, and thats on an old compaq k62 475mhz. pretty impressive if ya ask me :)

Before reading this tread, I used to shut down my computer when I went to bed, and start it up the next day.
Since reading it, the computer stays on. All the time. The only time it's unusable is when it freezes or restarts from too high of an overclock.
I can't believe I got into the habit of shutting down all night. When I think about all the hundreds, if not thousands of hours it could have spent folding, I want to hit something.

Only things I shut off are the monitors, otherwise both systems are running 24/7. With the exceptions of LAN's, modding, or changing hardware. Minimum, atleast one of my two systems is on. The other being off only because of transport or upgrade.
I usually let my monitor turn off with the Windows thing where if I go idle for say 15mins it'll turn off by itself. Since I heard turning it off by hand wasn't good for it.

I'm all 24/7.. Folding and all. I got so p***ed one Sunday I came back after being gone all weekend to find my computers off! Even worse I had password locked my main PC so no one would fiddle with it, so they obviously didn't do a proper shutdown. My parents had guests that weekend and apparently one of them slept in my room and found my 2 PCs to be too loud. grrrr.. i don't mind someone using my room (even though there was no need we have other beds), but don't mess with my folding! Ah well, I only lost like 16 hours.

That's why I have a UPS. Power failures never bothered me. At my old apartment I'd be sitting there cruising the net on my 56k not even notice the power failure. My PCs are only shutting down when I leave the country :D
I did however set my PC on fire one time. I had a sound card with a daughtercard (TBeach Montego II). I connected the cable that connects the two parts, but I did it wrong only connecting to half of the pins and the wrong half at that (I had done this many times before, but this one time I just wasn't paying attention). I turned on the PC, fortunately I was staring straight at the inside when I saw the cable burst into flames. Pulled out the plug and blew out the flame and a cloud of smoke came rushing out. Scary stuff... But no hardware died, just a burnt cable. I've taken note of where we keep the fire extinguisher since then.
All the time, why turn it off, chances are if I did, it wouldnt come back on...hehe

My computer is on 24/7 except when Windows decides to die, and takes everything with it. However, lately my sister has been putting it into standby overnight. Kills my already horible SETI times...
You know... The last time I remember PROPERLY shutting down my PC was probably a few months ago. If the computer is off, 99.5% of the time, I hit the power button cuz Windows up and died. Refused to listen to my many CTRL+ALT+DEL... ;)

Here's an idea: Shut down your PC before sleeping, but set up BIOS to turn it on sometime at night when you're guaranteed to be asleep. Or if its REALLY loud, set it up as a wake-up alarm :D
Also a good option for those of you who have people shutting your PC down, schedule it to turn on shortly afterwards ;)
You can also use ShutDownNow in combination with this.

I did the math once to see how much it would cost to run a 300 Watt PC 24 hours...
1 PC pulls 300 watts, that's .3 KW per hour on the bill...
24 hours a day, 30 days a month, thats...
216 Kw hours... Powers cheap up here(5.7 cents per Kw/H)
so 1 300 Watt PC 24 hours a day costs --->$12.31
So when both my roommate and I leave our PC's on 24 hours, that increases the bill of our 2 bedroom apartment 30%. Sorry, I hate to sound cheap, but I'm gonna turn it off at night. I'm just a poor college student.

Is it better to turn it off and give it a break when ur not usin it? Or is it really that bad to turn it off and on?

Only one slight flaw in your maths, it won't be pulliing 300 watts during the idle periods.
servers are on 24/7 however workstations automaticly shut down at 7 pm after back-up and start up at 8am and wait for log-in.
Don't forget that PCs make the best air filters in the market. So even if your not using it, it is colecting dust and small pieces of your pets. Some systems get so dirty they are fire hazzards. My sugestion for a home user would be to set-up your auto wake in your BIOS for the am, it has ben there since 1990 and use software for the shut down at night.

Anytime I bring a new machine on line, it first is left on only when I am nearby, then gets moved to being left on when I am awake and at home, then "graduates" to 24/7.
I do periodically power everything down though, maybe once every month or two, just to allow everything (inlcuding the network switch) to reboot and start "fresh".
All the 24/7 machines cruch seti, so no CPU cycles are wasted;)

Only one slight flaw in your maths, it won't be pulliing 300 watts during the idle periods.

It possible for a pc to catch on fire but the fans are what keeps the heat down. all the mishaps I have heard of are from fans failing. you could set bios to thottle down cpu if temps reach a certain temp if not already set. another idea would be to get a fan adapter so you will be able to run a larger & quietier fan while maintaining the same temps you have now.
How did I miss this? I guess I should have voted that they are on while in use instead of on 24/7, except that they are in use 24/7. ahhh the confusion.

I turn it on a 7:00 and turn it off at 11:00. I'm scared on my nice 19" Philips 109P screen getting screwed, along with the HDD's, so I have them set to turn off after 10 minutes (call me obssessed or what!!).
Even if i wanted to leave it on all the time, no way that's gonna work cause win me memory management sucks bigtime. After opening a few programs (or more than a few) I don't have any free memory. On 24/7 folding for team 32 (2 cpu's totaling over 2Ghz). I don't personally like hibernate, i've had problems with it, plus when I want to use my computer i don't want to have to wait for it to boot up. Also, if you have a lot of ram (i used to have 768) the hibernate process takes forever cause everything in the ram is stored on the hard drive, the computer shuts down, and when it reboots, it just restores the ram off the hd. Thats over 1.5 gig of transfer. Too long for my taste (also want my hd to last as long as it can).

I leave it on as long as I can. I don't trust it though. Came into the house one night after hanging out with some friends for a few hours and all I smelt was burning electronics. Luckily I saved it. I once listened to an interview with the Prez of Micron, and in the parting shot, the interviewer asked "if you could say one thing to computer users to make their equipment last longer what would it be?" and he replied very quickly "never turn your computer off" and he went on to explain that with all the dissimilar components that make up a PC, the cooling and heating times are very different, even in a single chip, and fractures can result from off and on routines...he explained it better than I could, but you get the gist of what he said...and I took it to heart, and my machine crunches S@H.......somebody's got to look 4 little green men:cool:

nope, turning your computer on and off will reduce life quicker.
Stanford University. its worth it, seti is cool but IMO folding has a more posotive effect to influence me to do it. also folding uses UN-USED cpu cycles so it will never lag your system! (not sure about seti, i assume its the same)

Sorry to be so picky DrewBoOty but I just read this yesterday so I couldn't resist.
Turning your PC on and off wears it out. Five or more years ago, there was something to this, but not today, say Hershberg and others. It used to be that PC hard disks did not automatically park their heads when shut off, and that frequent on/off cycling could damage the hard disks. Today's PCs are designed to handle 40,000 on/off cycles before a failure, and that's a number you likely won't reach during the computer's five-to-seven-year life span.
This is one myth that was addressed in this article (http://www.bcentral.com/articles/enbysk/158.asp?cobrand=msn) that was on MSN the other day.

Folding is similar to SETI@Home: you run a client on your local pc and download units of work, process them and send them back.
Here at OC.Com we have teams doing both, look in Distributed Computing for their forums.
Links:Overclockers.Com Seti Team
Overclockers.Com Folding Team
Both teams are always looking for new members!
24/7 Running 8 fans with a "baybus" and sleep just fine. Only take it down when there is low level lightening. When it is down, i take absolutely everything apart and give it a good cleaning. (usually once every two or three months)
Someone care to take the time to explain the Fold or SETI at home to me i am interested. I have read all the links in previous posts, but most everything went zip wizzz over my head.
I understand this: Folding is similar to SETI@Home: you run a client on your local pc and download units of work, process them and send them back.
but what is the "units of work" and why would i want to download more work than what i already have to do?

All day and all night. I have both SETI and Folding, I'm trying to decide between the two. I'm probably gonna build another computer and just run SETI on it and just leave it at that, and run Folding on this one. I always leave it on, its never off. That might be the reason why its always so warm in my room. hmmmm. I don't pay the power bills, but it don't cost that much and hell, we have 3 air conditioners, so I don't use that much power anyways. Fold peeps, cure some cancer.

Oh yeah, I turn it off to install or for a quick rest or if there is a lightning storm, but I do have a battery for it, so.....

Mine is a bit loud. So i just turn it off at night since it is about 1 foot from my pillow. I unplug it for safety during storms/going away for more than 24 hours
