Hi so I bought a WRT54GL and I cant seem to encrypt it and have my old 802.11b adapter detect it. I could upgrade but so would the woman downstairs who is renting my basement. I dont think I could convince her to buy another adapter.

So the problem is, I cant seem to connect w/ the router when it is encrypted using WEP. So I resort to MAC filtering (I know u can crack that in 5mins tops). I disabled the broadcasting of SSID, but is there anything I can do to secure my network further. I spent at least 5hrs or more working on this already.

The last thing I want is some douche surfing kiddie porn on my network and the cops come knocking at my door. :D

Cheers

Plug into the router physically, set it up, then try the WEP on wireless. You'll need the channel, the WEP key, the SSID....that's about it. It should work. If it's still not working, explain what you have done and we'll dig into the steps.

I did the same here at the house; MAC filtering, SSID broadcast off and WEP. It's not perfect, but since there are other wireless targets that are easier to find around me, I feel ok with this.

Thanks for the help, but I finally got it resolved, after another 2 hrs :bang head. It just so appears that at each menu u have to "save it" b4 u go to another.

But its at WEP 64 bit and Mac filter and SSID off. That should be good enuff.

Did you happen to see what kind of stuff your neighbor was looking at while on your router? Just curious because if it was bad enough then 64-bit WEP wouldn't be my stopping point (but that's just me.)
