Okay guys heres teh story, I came home from work yesterday to find that my dads computer has went bad, well the motherboard, apparently he tried to install a new 56k modem, well he didnt get it in the PCI slot and when he turned it on nothing...no fans, ziltch..nada..So..I check all the hardware V3..hardrive, and the new modem..all work fine...So..I give my uncle a call, He has a 1gig Athlon and Asus A7V133 lying around since he got a p4 system, I asked him if he wanted the board, turns out he was going to give it to me for christmas...but forgot it...So this weekend I run up to my grandmas to find that my uncle had left the board there, I grabbed it came back home and setup my dad with my Athlon 550..and I get my 1gig AXIA cored Socket A athlon out of my KT7a that has been in a box for quite awhile...
After getting my dads pc set to go with 4 gig Seagate HDD, 550 Athlon Slot A not overclocked, yet, Voodoo3 2000 PCI, WinMe, 56k Aztec modem, and SB 16 ISA, Windows Me seems to have taken to the new setup easy..as All I did was setup the pc boot up and WinMe installed drivers, I left to come back from a friends house with it setting at the desktop...Well that went good I though. Next I get to work on setting up my PC..this is where it all goes wrong..

I had nothing but some white thermal goop so I put some on the Tbird and into the socket she went, pushed down the lever and clipped on the heatsink with 7200rpm fan ( one loud sucker)
SO...I hit the switch...there is a long delay that scares me...ah but finaly the screen comes up with all the boards info...even raid, though I dont have a raid to setup..into the BIOS I go to set the cpus proper peramiters froma FSB of 100 to 133 cause it was running at 750, not 1000, As I get to teh screen for setting this it locks...Im like oh no...Faster than lighting my hand flies to the PS switch and off the screen goes...and thats when I smell it...a perfectly fried proc, taking off the heatsink reveals yellow spot on the heatsink and there is little to no thermal goop left...
Just incase it didnt fry I reapluy the goop..and try a diff heatsnink after cleaning up the proc, i turn it back on, the fans spin but nothing on the screen after a very very long delay...........

So here I am sitting in front of my dads pc posting this, I am going to this friday after I get my paycheck and get another 1ghz athlon tbird from a comp store near where I work...not to meantion another heatsink and better thermal paste...I have yet to figgur out why my poc fried..im thinking the heatsink wasnt seated properly or the clip not tight enough...Also I pray that the board is okay...

I think some of those thermal paste you put on might have connect all or some of the bridge on the processor and short circus the whole thing.
or give the processor to much juice voltage, multiplier.

sorry to hear that:confused:

i figured out what it was...the clip for the heatsink was on backwards...which caused the heatsink to not sit fully on the core....

Seem's to me that the Thermal Paste Liquified.

That's why i recommend leaving out the processor out for about a Hour before installing it onto the motherboard.
