On the duron and athlon chips. Just what is the pencil trick doing? Is that what they call unlocking the chip???

Welcome to the forums !
Yup, the pencil trick connects the L1 bridges on the top of the CPU, so it unlocks the multiplier. there are some unlocking guides on the front page, in the beginners guides I think
basically, you chip comes to you with the multiplier locked.
lets say it's a 1 gig 266 chip.
The multiplier is 7.5 and your front side bus setting is 133.
so when you unlock the chip with the pencil trick, you can then adjust the multi to higher levels.
8x133 would get you 1066
The pencil trick is good. but using a better agent like defogger repair kit will probably yield better results for you.

Thanks,
Duron 850 FSB 200. In a board that supports FSB133. Is it possible to unlock the chip and set the board to 133 (with changing out SDRAM from pc100 to pc133) and hit speeds of 1130.5MHz?
Sorry for sounding so new...My first overclock.
Also just what is Folding?

You do not need to "unlock" the cpu when you overclock using the front side bus.

I unlocked the multi on my Duron for the sake of it, I used it to find the most stable speed w/ default Vcore. w/ unlocked multi u have much more freedom in setting speeds...
But if ur chip can do a 1130.5MHz then just leave it as it is and up the FSB to 133 and Vcore as far as u have to, to get stable, just watch ur temps, they tend to go way up when u increase Vcore, most importantly don't go above 50C
Good luck, welcome to the forums, and happy new year
First of all, Welcome to the forums.
Check the "CPU Database" located on the front page of this site to see what others have achieved with that CPU.
Depending on the motherboard that you have, it may not in fact support a 133MHz FSB. The early socket A motherboards with the original KT133 chipset would seldom go much above the 107 / 110 MHz range, even though the board had the jumpers for it.
Post more of your system information, you should be able to get more specific responces related to your equipment.
Good Luck!

Is the multiplier dependent on the Duron chip itself or the motherboard? How do you pick which multiplier you want to use.
thanks
Rig in construction:
Duron 850 FSB 200 (It wants to be overclocked. I can tell.)
ECS K7VZA Rev. 3.0
190 MB pc100, (looking for a way to use 384 MB pc133)
Maxtor 60 GIG HD 7200 rpm
Looking at Gainward Geforce2 ti, 64 MB
Built in Sound card for now.

Depends, if it's unlocked, then the motherboard will have the control on the multiplier, if it's still locked, then no matter what multiplier you change it to on the mobo, there will be no effect
I bought a Circuit Writer pen. I think it works better than pencil. It makes conductive traces anywhere you mark. I thought it would be great for unlocking my Duron. You can also use it to make jumpers on hdds and cr rom drives and has a few other uses too. Although it costs $10.00 and a pencil costs about $.30!
