Ok folks got my Q6600 running two instances of smp with a mild oc, all seems to be well, anything i should know about stopping the clients if i need to up the output on the Quad, sure i read somewhere that work may be lost if i make a mess of the shut down. Board is a GIGA P35-DS3L which im loving to bits and cooling is via a xigmatek HDT-S128. Oh yea afiinity changer is doing its stuff also :) Griff

If you mean close the problem while saving your work i think its CTRL + C

You only need to run one instance of smp, smp inturn runs 4 threads on your computer ( if you have 4 cores). To exit and save, select the client and press ctrl+c like neon said.

Just curious, what kind of cooling do you have on that?

Ok im good with the ctrl+c fellas, Two instances of smp is forecasted by fahspy to net the team 4220ppd tho.. Cooling is a xigmatek HDT-S128, quite a bit cheaper than a True and looks like this..

With affinity changer, running two instances will net you more points at the expense of slowing down the individual WUs return.

In this case, running two instances at an average of 12:01.5/frame yeilds 4215 ppd, 1312 ppd/GHz (assuming both instances are p2653, worth 1760 points). This is quite close to production on Linux/VMware/2 x Linux SMP.

Is it worth turning up the juice on the Quad or leave it as it is for stability?

This is getting addictive, i need the Q9450's to hit the uk sooner rather than later, My old Fx60 is worth £200 on ebay, thats a big hit towards a new Yorkfield..

IIRC, you may run into a problem with shutting down two instances of Win SMP. It seems the Ctrl-C shuts mpiexec.exe which kills all threads not just the one instance's threads. I don't know if this has been addressed yet in the Windows client. You could actually lose the second instance WU.

This is the problem i was looking for a solution to, any tinkering will be done after WU sends are finalized.. Cheers

You're running two instances of WinSMP with no VMWare?

So you've got 8 core threads all running happily along?

Ain't you the sly one, though? :sn:

Good luck! Keeping it running until they're both done sounds like the way to go.

A very big hit towarss it, if these prices maintain at release you only need £11

Thats mad that is, had a drive over to Aria last week, only 40 miles from my abode, punched the post code in the satnav and ended up in a cul de sac a mile away from target.. Well at least i know where to find it now, tnx for the link

how do you run multiple instances? do i run the installer 2 times? i have C:/FAH and C:/fah2 but when i run fah1 config and fah2 config both see the same id. and the 2nd instance dose not run.

I think its in advance options, set machine id to 1 & 2 respectively.

Would highly, highly recommend going to Ubuntu in two VMs. Both of mine do about 4600PPD around 3.2ghz, closer to 5100PPD if clocked over 3.6

As in 4600PPD on one rig and 5100+ on the other rig, not combined.

i beleive the only way to run 2 SMP's is under VM/linux, NOT under windows because it is far more efficient.

I think running two instances of WinSMP is like swapping motherboards without reinstalling Windows. It can work, but you will eventually have issues.

but thats the thing. this http://distributed.org.ua/forum/index.php?showtopic=1149 is supposed to allow you to run 2 instances on a quad. and people have used it and have it work properly.

humm... i guess i'll restart it and see if it fails again today. if it dose, then i'll leae 1 to run anf fix it when i get home from ohio.

That's just supposed to shuffle affinities, it's not supposed to fix two instances of WinSMP. You're still sharing mpiexec with two WinSMPs, and if I were you, I wouldn't want to take a chance of trashing a WU.
