Canon EOS 40d and no I do not use flash.you may want too when it's kind of dark out or dreary out. also use the iso of 400 + in the same setting's.
and when it's sunny out use the iso of 100-400 and no flash.
Try that the next time you take some photo's.

Turd, if you're getting lighting issues, don't be hesitant to crank up the ISO to 1600 or even 3200 on your camera. Canon's sensors are extremely efficient at handling noise and you can easily smooth it out in PP (I use NoiseNinja Photoshop Plug-In) and it still leaves great images after smoothing.

I will have to look for that plugin. I was worried about the noise if I shot it too high. But I will have to try some shots with Higher ISO's and see.

TurdF -The 40d has internal noise reduction for high ISO. You just have to enable it in the functions menu. I would try that at 1600 and 3200. It should easily handle your needs. Great camera. I just bought one today and can't wait to get it and start shooting.

I wouldn't even bother using internal noise reduction. It's easy enough to do in PP. It slows down your FPS as well in certain situations.

What are you basing this on? Not to offend but I think the 40D gets like 6fps. Shooting at night with an insane ISO like 3200 and using no flash, with a tripod and manual or live view, I would think the last thing you would worry about is FPS? But you could be right on, I just chimed in because of all the reviews I recently poured through and my experience with noise reduction leads me to believe that preparatory is the best solution. I think at 800 or 1600 it may be ideal. I will know for sure when I get mine as I have noise ninja and phase one and some PS plugins. But personally I have never liked software noise reduction.

Noise reduction takes another frame after the shot and compares the noise between the two IIRC. This lowers your FPS in certain conditions for processing. It's a custom function and it takes a couple menus to get into it and change it. Chances are if you use it you might tend to just leave it on.
40D gets 6.5 FPS :)

from canon" Long exposure noise reduction is equal on the EOS 40D and 30D cameras. [Off], [Auto],
or [On/always applied] can be selected. The time required for noise reduction processing
is equal to the duration of the original exposure; the next photograph cannot be
shot until noise reduction processing in progress is complete.
High ISO noise reduction (C.Fn II-2) can be used for images taken at a high ISO speed,
as with the EOS-1D Mark III. Although some noise reduction is applied at all ISO speeds,
it is particularly effective at high ISO speeds. However, at low ISO speeds, noise in the
shadow areas is, in fact, further reduced. Also, when [High ISO speed noise reduction]
is set, the maximum burst during continuous shooting will decrease to 8, regardless of
the image-recording quality."
Yes I see what you are saying about the speed loss, I still am going have to see for myself as far as quality goes.
I did not know that it did a comparison I thought that it was hardware( on-chip) and had to do with signal gain.
Here is an interesting read on noise starting on P17

Do you have a 100mm macro? I'd probably save up and opt for that as opposed to the EF-s 60 just for the extra working distance.

the 40D is also very good at higher ISO levels (400-1600) with out showing alot of noise, unlike my 20D or older rebels where once you hit 800 you can clearly see the noise on the images.
you could also use bracket exposures (i think the xt /Xsi lines do it?)
for me i always take many pics of the same thing at diff exposures, ISO and such so i can go back and choose what looks best, its not like your going to run out of film and wait to get it exposed to see if you like it or not, remeber digital, lots of room, lots of pics.

i had a 100mm tokina before, i was considering the canon 100mm, but alot of the bugs i know i will be shooting are small, and dont need large working distances, so the 60 will be fine for me for now, but based on some of the price checking i have done and with Canon rebates going on, i may be getting the mp-e after all! fingers crossed!
also i like the ef-s 60mm cause of it's size and weight.

Yea I know what you mean, I just ordered mine and waiting for shipment. From what I have been reading you can enable noise reduction for high ISO only from the menu. Gonna try that as well as the tone thing-new toy. Good choice on the 28-135, I love mine.
I have most of my lenses but need a macro. Have you looked into the Phoenix 100 macro? Everyone seems to like it. I first heard about it here at OC. I hardly shoot macro but I wanna try with the live view at 10x .

I have absolutely no problems with 800-1600 ISO on my 20D. I've used it plenty of times when it's necessary. Getting the shot is the first and foremost priority, not making sure it's the best shot in the world. :)

There are some noise-reduction algorithms that work with a single frame, and are often used in point-and-shoot cameras to help them with their (absolutely mind-boggling) ISO noise. What this feature is though is known as "dark frame subtraction".
Dark frame subtraction works by taking two pictures: one with the shutter open, and a second with the shutter closed for the same ammount of time. The second frame can then be subtracted from the first to yeild a final image with lower noise. Dark frame subtraction will *not* remove purely random noise from an image, but will almost completely eliminate noise due to "dark current".
Dark current is current that flows in an image sensor even when there is no light falling on it. Its caused by a number of things, but is (interestingly enough) highly temperature dependant. So much so in fact, that two frames from the same sensor taken at the same temperature will have nearly identical dark current noise. By taking a dark frame immediatly after an exposed frame, a large ammount of the noise in the image due to dark current may be removed.
Dark current is not as prominant an effect as ISO noise (which is essentially noise from the amplification of sensor signal) for short exposures, but becomes more and more significant as exposure time increases. By the time you hit a 10 second exposure, most noise will probably be from dark current.

Canon A560, one of the best $150 purchases I have ever made.
I just picked up a cannon 560 after reading the thread the other day of someone wanting to buy a 720 I think it was. I saw someone mention the added firmware in that thread and looked into it. I wanted another picture before we wen to Ocean City again this years I settled on one of the Cannon cameras and went up to RadioSmack. Well I pulled a few favors and got a nice Cannon a560 for a little over $20 and saved it from the junk heap at RMAC. The manager and I up there are friends. I guess that bottle of vodka and shortcake I took to him for his birthday paid off. Anyway Ive only had it for a few days and working most of those hours for those few days so I have very little photos to share from it. Ill post up a couple from it but dont be harsh. I was mostly experimenting with the firmware to see what it could do and get use to the camera. Ill have to scan and post my 35mm stuff.

I just today got my Bogen 3021 tripod in. Now I just gotta get out and shoot.
I got it for $110 shipped from AZ (I'm in MA), and I got a 488RC2 head off Craigslist for $60 locally. Good stuff

Were you refering to me? I've always had tons of fun with long exposures and double exposures and what not. I love doing fun stuff like that. I used to be really heavy into 35mm when I had my LEI SLR. That thing was a 30 year old german tank, literally, it was made from recycled metals supposedly in Germany. Any way lens inside finally broke and it cost to much for me to fix at the time. So I recently picked up the a560 just to have fun again. I dslr is going to be to expensive for me for some time. Now I got into hdr stuff.

for me to get everything i want to replace my stolen 20D, I am looking at about $3k CAD.
Ouch, that hurts. Im happy with my a560 point and shoot at the moment. If I stay with it Ill buy good equipment but that may be for some time. At least with the magick of photoshop and can still apply things like GND, and ND, and warming and cooling filters and what not. All though it does kinda suck I cant do double exposures with it but oh well.

Yes you can. Double exposures aren't possible on most modern dSLRs, but the same effect can be done in Photoshop.

Hmm, you can do it that way kinda too. Put the camera on 30sec or bulb, then use a flash and take multiple exposures by firing the flash multiple times during the exposure. Or do a long exposure, flash once, cap the lens, change subject, uncap lens, flash again and then end exposure (bulb).

ryan, your exposures are not consistent.
I wanted to make fun of how low that bar was. Then I seen they were one step above children.
If your camera supports it. Learn how to use the dial to set the programs. So when you move around, it is easier to get solid shots.
All the faces are framed in shadows. Might want to figure out how to use shadows to frame the moment (time of day), not be part of the face. AS for example. That one little girl looks really proud. It is a great frame, but her face is kind of hidden., It was cool to see her all confident and how she held the reins. Not to be a tool, you blew a great shot. It could of shown who she was.
Most of the other shots are off by a hair. You know where to strand for angles and such. The settings seems to kind of crap out for you.
You caught the uuuhhmpphh of the jump.. The prideful child, the haha I am here girl and the mix of the riding club in general
I am not being mean. I want to see the story your telling with the pictures. Learn them settings so you can tell the whole story. Not have it hidden with shadows and bad exposures. Your saving a moment. Don't let the viewer see it is a picture.
One great exposure can be art. 5 exposures can tell a story. 50 pictures can document something. Imagine having each exposure tell it's own story.
You got the I am thinking about the shot down. Now learn to use that camera.
Oh if your camera club gives you issues. They must not be for hire. Since you take exposures as your asked not what the subject is. It is a challenge of the great shots. Not what is in the shots. The exposures speak for themselves.

Here is a cool image I took. I tried to give the impression of how steep the road this home sits on is, and the time of day the image was taken. ... Did it work?
Does it give a sense of leaning? Does it give the impression of late in the day?
Part of the image seems to lean, from a steep road, but it is not. I wanted to make the eyes lean... More of a feeling than illusion.
http://enablingwolf.com/OCpix/house.jpg
It seems like the road has an incline to it but doesnt seem terribly steep. You could have held the camera just a tad over more to give it more of that effect. I've done that before and if you do it just a hair it can work. Also the impression I get from photo is that it is mid afternoon? If you took the photo mid afternoon and wanted it to appear that it was more in mid or later evening (or what ever you consider late in the day) you can tone the brightness down in photoshop and make the contrast a tad higher and adjust the curves and colors tones for a bit darker image. Dodging and burner the shot a little more to could help make it appears later to.
Also to make a more interesting picture you could have included to light pole a little more and cropped out or framed out the tree branches at the top left of the picture. Look up the rule of thirds a little. This helps to give your photo a good look to it.
Anyway no harsh criticism. It's just stuff I see and would do differently, but thats how we learn from each other by seeing others points of view(and not corrections.)
Enablingwolf
06-11-08, 07:35 PM
Well I can't use photoshop. GiMP user here. :D
I don't want to give an exact time of day. Just later in the day. Long shadows and all. :D If I remember right. The image was taken about 18:30 or around that. Depending on the season, it is hard to make it seem like an exact time. Just an impression.
Actually the picture was taken form a moving vehicle. So the thirds rule was hard to get. So this is one of them on the fly shots that with a little post processing could be much better. The road is not really all that steep. But that sense of the road having a pitch is there. I didn't want to over exaggerate the frame. Just upward travel, as if your walking up a hill later in the day. The power pole with the light on it was really boring and actually gave to much bloom to be of use. Why it was omitted.
If I am going to mention concepts to others. Might as well give examples to show with a good example to spark discussion on it.
I take criticism well. Like you mentioned. It gives another angle on subject matter.
That picture I posted is far from art or good. Just an impression picture. So far everyone I showed it to. Has leaned their head slightly. So it seems to work in a basic way. :D

now i got to try that
as for the lighting, mid day is great but it is too bright usually, a cloudy sky is often a photographers friend (not like storm but slight cloud) , best way to get good shots on a sunny day is to make sure the sun is behind you somewhere, that is a rule in general, keep light source behind you to light up your subjects
you need to learn to frame your images better with the lighting you have, focus on the something you want to stand out and frame it, if it means moving around alot, crouching, looking like a fool in public, do it, always worth it in the end.
also one of the pics is over exposed a little, so you need to learn your camera in manual mode and be able to quickly adjust ISO levels, when i first for my 20D i use auto alot, then once i moved to M, it never left M again! (unless i let my g/f use it) and i know once i have my 40D - right to M, a wedding i was at, a friend had a 30D, on auto mode, g/f was telling them i did photography so they handed me their camera, first thing i noticed and i said it 'ewwww auto mode" you got a $1500 camera here and your using it like a p&S - SWITCH M mode!

I do fail to understand why they even bother putting auto modes in the cameras above the consumer line (xxxD series, and now the new canon xxxxD series, starting with the 1000D/Rebel XS). Chances are if you are spending $1200 retail for a mid-range camera, you should know what the hell you're doing. As soon as I got my 20D off ebay, for a measly $500 from someone who clearly didn't know much about photography (was set to green box, and everything seemed almost brand new.. not complaining :D) I switched the dial to M and haven't ever switched it out in the near year that I've had the camera. Manual is so much easier to shoot; I almost never shoot in changing lighting conditions, so once I experiment as to what is working fine, I set it and forget it, focusing more on composition and such.
Still gotta go out and get some use on the Bogen 3021/488RC2 combo I just impulse bought :D

Now I do like M mode but I am also a huge fan of the other semi auto modes (especially P). I like that it gives me a lot of control of the things I want to control while letting the camera do the balancing. It just frees me up to focus more on what is going around me and anticipating the timing and framing of the next shot rather than, "oh crap I didn't take a picture in the last 15 minutes and the rapidly decreasing daylight just destroyed that picture."
Seriously it is amazing how much the rods in our eyes and our pupil compensate for that decreasing light towards dusk and we don't even notice it. But the camera's sensor sure does.
Don't get me wrong I have not put my 20d past that green box since I got it but I do move it from M from time to time.

That picture I shared in response to your set. I see it as, I am taking 100 images to find that really nice one. Sometimes..sometimes; I get lucky and git a better ratio.
Here is the first image I took of that house. Compared to this test shot and giving it about 3 seconds thought. The image i posted is much nicer. I knew what I wanted and such. You do not always have time for "that" shot.
[Compared to the first image - It shows the road grade loads better, but it loses that sidewalk curving around the house./// But it's a very cluttered frame. The thirds rule is closer, but makes the house look further back. Lighting is pleasing, but to much crap distracting the eye.]

I think I'd rather the screen on the 30D or even my 20D... the 40D's screen is possibly the biggest flaw with the 40D. They took the same resolution of the 30D and just stretched it out so image quality went right down the drain. That said, I never use the LCD for anything besides viewing composition, and the histogram can graph exposure, so I have no worries using the LCD for that.

Yep, it's a female ruby-throated hummingbird (only the males have a ruby-throat). Here's one I took the other day of a female flying (no flash, would have been better with flash)..

Hardly a full rainbow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow). It's actually only a shot of a hazy primary bow with the distinctive (Alexander's) dark band above it. If you want all the main characteristics, you'll want two bows (the second, fainter one will have its colours reversed), and if you're lucky, you'll also spot supernumerary bows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow#Supernumerary_rainbows), which will only appear for certain raindrop sizes.
Good luck with your future rainbow hunting.

Here is a poor shot of a double rainbow. By the time I got the camera out and setup. It was fading. You can barely see the second bow on the left.
The lighting was freaking my camera out on auto. So I got what I could on a very fast manual setting.. I was very close to losing the second bow altogether. Still it's hardly there.

Nice :)
Are you using extension tubes as well, or just the 60mm alone? You must have very little working distance, 60mm can't allow for very much distance.
I am saving up for... well, I don't know what. On my "to-buy" list is a new camera bag (either a Crumpler 6 or 7 MDH or, most likely, the Lowepro Slingshot 300AW), a grip for my 20D (BG-E2(n)), a 100mm Macro and an 85 f/1.8. Then I'll be truely happy with my camera gear. Possibly go for a 50 f/1.4 and one of Canon's wider primes (28-35 range) and possibly a 10-22. It'll take me years to build up my lens collection =D
Mr.Guvernment

just 60mm alone, nothing else right now, and your right the distance seems to be about 3 inches maybe.. does the 60mm work with extensions to do you know?
i love my camera bag, Lowepro sling bag, the $120 one!
i wanted the grip for the 40D, but for $379, no way, i could of gotten the $299 grip + battery + bag combo but didnt have the cash, so i just got the battery so i have 2 batteries but the camera does feel weird, especially doing hoziontal pics and moving my hand into that angle.
for me, my order would be
100mm macro
grip
10-22 or nice tele lense
i got the nifty 50 1.8, pretty decent lense for $120, but the 1,4 would be nice too.
i would say get the Macro ;) more interesting world in macro to see.

$379 for a battery grip?! Insane! The grip goes for around $125-$150USD used/like new at POTN. That's where I'm buying most of my camera gear haha. The nifty I picked up for around $90USD with the hood and adapter brand new from B&H. I just gave my bro $90 to pick myself up a Lowepro Slingshot 300AW. There are two going in the POTN classies, one for $80 and one for $90... I'm willing to spend that much for either, it's a $130-$140ish bag.
All lenses work with extension tubes AFAIK. You do lose some light (I think if you stack all three of the common Kenko tubes, 12 + 24 + 36) you lose out 2 stops of light... pulling the numbers out of no where but if I remember correctly thats about it. If you don't have a fast lens you'll lose AF, but for macro you don't really need AF anyway.

will need to check out the potn classies for a battery grip! i almost crapped myself when i saw $379 CAD for one for the 40D!!! what a scam!
for the ext i dont mind if i lose some light as the 60mm is 2.8 and i have a flash, something else i need to buy is a flash arm to move it for better light so it is more or less a non issue for me in the end, ideally i want to have 2 x 430EX (i beleive they can work together or i may need to step up to the 5 series, but i heard the 430 is being replaced soon)

The 430EX II was announced recently. I'm not sure if you can fire them wirelessly using one as a master, but you can definitely use an optical slave provided you don't use E-TTL.
I use a Vivitar 283 myself... Too oldschool and poor to buy myself an E-TTL flash =_=

You'll love the Slingshot 300. I can fit one pro and one mid body. Two 17-50, 50mm,70-300 and two flashes. Extra storage for cards, built in cloth, raincoat...Its real nice. Sadly all this gear gets real heavy with all the batteries and junk.

SolidxSnake
07-02-08, 08:26 AM
I know at the moment the 300 is too big, but I plan on expanding quite a bit in the coming years (Grip, 85 f/1.8, 100 Macro) and I'd rather have more space than I need rather than not enough.
I am thinking of picking up the 200, looks like a nice size.

I have the 10-22 and I love it. The expanse that a picture covers i huge.
As far as the 430 goes you need a 580 (or 550 I think) to be the master. The 430 can only function as a slave (I have a 580 ex II and a 430).
I wish I could have gotten by with a lowepro slingshot 200 but with a 70-200 2.8L it is hard to go any smaller than the 300. I do have to say though I wish I had a 2 strap backpack style bag rather than a one strap one. On long hikes my back starts to bother me with a bag pulling on one side. YMMV of course. Just something to think about.

Already sent out $90 for a SS 300. I don't have too much gear and the design looks great for me. I have a small hama backpack (for sale to help fund my SS300 purchase) that holds all of my gear, but I find it very uncomfortable while walking, and I can't easily take gear out or put gear in unless I have a reasonably steady surface.

The 550 should work fine. I have a 550EX and two 540EZ's using those cheap ebay triggers. They work great once you "fix" the antenna on the transmitter. The whole setup cost me ~$450. I just use the 540's in manual mode.

You need the lens to be stopped down and typically a flash as well. DoF will be very narrow at macro focusing distances. You can use any macro lens, or a normal lens with an adapter, or a reverse mounted lens. I would recommend pre-focusing and letting your subject move into view and/or focus by moving the camera. You shouldn't need a tripod; in fact, I would think a tripod would make things awkward.
yep, Right here in Mechanicsville the other night.
After 100 frames this was the only frame that caught the bolts. The thick rod in the middle was just an over exposure from the light. Hell no I wasn't that close.
Nice man. We been getting some bad storms like that over here in Culpeper as of late.

That picture has a ridiculously large DOF for what seems to be such a close distance. It's possible the pic is a crop and thus the DOF looks larger than it would be... I'm not sure.
All I know is that it's an awesome pic
BTW... got my Lowepro Slingshot AW 300 this morning. It is a great bag, I must say. Very roomy and the SS design is great. The 300 is a little bulky but I'd rather have more room than I need rather than not enough room.

yup the slings rule! now you just got to fill it!
may try later or a day with more light + my flash, problem is with the 60mm macro the focus / dof area is so small for focusing :(
trial and error i guess!

Thanks guys. I was trying for the shot, and that picture is the full, uncropped (although drastically shrunk) image. The fly was maybe 1/8th of an inch long, if that. I got quite a few blurry shots before this one, haha, just kept trying. Settings were 1/200, F10, IS0-400, hand-held and I used the built in flash. Here is the fly cropped at full size:

PS: The extra depth of field is because it is not a 1:1 image, more like 1:2
had some lightning last nigght, in the distance, tried to get it, but this is all I was able to catch.

My friends in a local Ska band, Skally Cap Mafia, had a show planned for last Saturday (July 12th) at a local church, but the church canceled the show and on short notice it was relocated to one of the other bands' practice spaces (in one of the bandmember's basement). I shot for SCM and these are some select shots that I liked. Click for full-view.

#8 is my personal favorite.
All shots here were shot with my 28-105 and my 283 bounced off the ceiling... strangely enough quite a few of the shots I took cast a shadow behind the subject in the picture on the wall, even though it was bounced off the ceiling without a bounce card. Possibly might have pointed it forward a tad, not sure. Either way, always fun at a show with around 20-30 people in a very small area. =)

All of the shots there were shot with the flash bounced off the ceiling. I hand-held the flash and shot the camera one-handed. The ceiling was extremely low (I'm around 5'4" or 5'5" and I could touch the ceiling, I'd say maybe 6.5ft at the highest) and this made it difficult to bounce the flash, but many of the shots exposed well if I held the flash low enough.

That explains it, i had the same results in one location with the ceiling being so low, it looks like the flash is pointed directly at them and you don't get alot of back lighting because of it.
haven't been doing much macro lately, got plenty of animal pics will need to get up one day and 1700 pics i took while in vacation.

I hate you all and your DSLR's.
That was a sour hint of jealousy there. Anyway for us point and shoot guys if you have chdk on your camera with a good intervolameter script you can use a program called imagestacker to combine a lot of the same pictures to reduce noise, increase image sharpness, and make more vibrant colors. It can take 10+ shots of the same settings but it works great and the script makes it so easy.

OK, Im looking for a new camera. SLR is out (too big, want something I can carry in a pocket if need be, and cant justify the cost for the use it would get). I want something with a reasonable zoom, fairly compact size (but doesnt have to be ultra-small, just not SLR size), and takes decent pics in low light (I take a fair amount of pictures at gigs, where the available light is not always that great). Was looking at the Canon Powershot S5 IS. Any good?

I had the Canon S5 IS, and for low light I found it to be completely lacking. I sold it and went with a Nikon D40, which is loads better. If you don't need the zoom, the Olympus 420 with the pancake lens would be awesome, but that's and DSLR combo. Honestly, you're probably not going to like what you find. The Canon G9 might be your best bet, but you'll certainly pay for it. It's the same price I paid for my D40.
P&S have their place for snap photos, but that Oly 420 is certainly tempting for anyone wanting a small workhorse.

08-13-08, 11:28 AM
Well, you'll be looking at an SLR if you need any low-light photography. Anything else has far too small of a sensor (I suppose the new Sigma DP-1 is the best you'll get, it's got an SLR-sized sensor in a compact body, but the lens is a "normal" prime lens). As for superzooms, the Powershot S5IS is pretty good. The G9 is also a powerful compact, but again, I wouldn't count on anything besides an SLR for low-light, cranking up the ISO just gives bad shots because of the ridiculous amount of noise.
Smallest SLR you'll find is the Olympus 4/3rds system. If you're going to end up going for a compact SLR, go for the canon XSi (450D). I'd never shoot a consumer-range canon solely because they are so small and don't have a quick dial, but if you have fast primes on them you at least have autofocus (unlike Nikon's D40 and D60).

Little buggers are HARD to get some shots of, at least, with my reversed kit-lens as my macro lens. The lens has very little working distance so they fly away before I can frame and focus the shot.

It's been addictive for me. Got my first macro lens a few months ago and I've taken pictures with it almost every day since. I have probably around 5000 macro shots to sort through this winter (so far, many more to come), haha! It's amazing how many different insects I've found just in my own yard. Also, check out www.bugguide.net , it's a great place to find out the names of the insects you find.

Winter brings even more fun taking macro shots. The super clear air, and ice, snow and other subjects.. The lighting in Winter can be very neat to work with. Plus some things you can get much closer to than in warmer times. I am deadly allergic to bees. Though this Winter I might go take some really nice shots of one or two nests I know of. Up close.
Imagine catching a snow flake mid-fall in macro.. One of my holy grail shots I would like to get. That and a Cardinal on a snowy branch. Some birds are hard to get nice shots of. Soon as they see you, they are gone.
Sort them as you have time. Since once you see how cool icicles are in certain light. It is going to be even more fun.

Another baltimore panorama. I was waiting for traffic to clear after a baseball game and snapped this. I stitched it together from 36 RAW images and it is a 600 meg psd file. The resolution is staggering.

That's pretty cool. However, a 600MB file?!? I'm not sure my PC could handle working with that in Photoshop, haha!
Anyway, what lens did you use for that picture? Do you overlap the pictures? Also, do you keep the camera in one spot on a tripod and just pivot the camera in one direction a little for each shot? I ask because I'd like to do the same with Philadelphia (from Camden, NJ) but I've never taken a panoramic photo before. So, do you have any tips you could give for a first timer?

You need a tripod and you need to align the camera on the tripod so it pivots along the nodal point. The nodal point is the pivot point that will have no perspective shift when you rotate the lens.

Well, according to wikipedia, you're supposed to rotate along the entrance pupil, but arguing semantics doesn't change results :D

I used a Sigma 24-60mm EX DG f/2.8 lens and Canon 350D (Rebel XT). I did not use a tripod (using one would probably be better, but I didn't feel like carrying one around Baltimore all day). Just make sure that you have about a 1/3rd of the previous frame in the frame you're currently taking so everything can be lined up. Also be sure to set the camera to manual and to flip over to manual focus. Each shot must use identical settings. I focused on the aquarium @ f/10 so most of the scene would be in focus.
I used a Winbook laptop with a 1.86ghz C2D and 2 gigs of ram to stitch the image together; it ended up thrashing the hard drive and took over an hour, lol.

From the RNC. A lot of ok pictures but nothing great. Really dark and no place to setup (swat kept it tight). But it was nice having a 20d with a grip and a 70-200 2.8L because they didn't hassle me at all. They kept asking other people questions and stopping them but I think I looked like press. It was nice. Coincidentally a lot of the photogs there had my lens. They also had them attached to a 1ds markIII but nevertheless there I stood.

I bought my camera more for the 3" lcd than the resolution, but I just moved and have been taking some pics in my back yard so I will share. I know they arent great, I am a "set the camera on auto" point and shoot sort of guy;)
Some were also taken with my cell phone before I could find my camera in all the boxes:(

^Nice.
Here's a few shots from yesterday. Sorry about the noise, I was shooting at ISO 1600 due to the overcast weather and the use of a CPL.
This shot was run through Noise Ninja, the other weren't:
