These were taken with my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S500. Not the best camera...but it satisfies my amateur photography needs.
Any way I have been following this thread for some time and I thought I would offer something from my small bag of tricks.
I am into finding "art" in the unique and mundane. Never (well rarely) take any staged pictures.
ANY-FOR-WHO
would like your opinion on these:

The last picture has a very sad story behind it.
this is an actual Homeless persons "nest" under a bridge only a block or so from my old apartment back in IOWA. about a month after I took this picture a old man nearly froze to death here.

Small compacts take great macro shots, they can keep so much of the image in focus because of the small sensor (huge DOF). Only thing I miss about a compact camera over an SLR.

I went out to Midland the past weekend for hot air balloon. Friday evening was scrubbed (launch and glow) due to wind but otherwise it went great. It's also a real test of my new camera.
Seemed to have excellent color and takes blue background better than my last one. No filter was used at all.

This little guy (some type of jumper?) has been on a curtain in my bathroom all day long. He's still there, I took these pictures several hours ago. Hasn't moved an inch. Made it easy to get these shots :D
I say these shots, because this is my first successful macro stack. There are some artifacts here and there (mainly parts that are OOF because I didn't have any shots of said parts being in focus), but nothing too major. Was SUPER simple with Photoshop CS4 as well, ZMCombine and Zerene Stacker both failed miserably with the spider's texture at stacking. I used a tripod for this as well, which definitely made it much easier.
Shot with the 18-55 II kit lens.

I definitely like both. From my experience it is always hard to get either of the photos you took, especially the one where the cat looks that content. :)
Thanks :) , i did get a better camera btw , a Canon rebel XS its far better then the P&S and just enough to get me in the world of photography .And i call him Banditos btw , am not a cat person but he is alright .

This female wasp (Genus Anastatus) was parasitizing these Leaffooted Bug eggs. The wasp itself is about 2mm long:
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll202/dans__pics/wasp_1.jpg
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll202/dans__pics/wasp_2.jpg
9 days later, a full adult wasp emerged from each egg, except this one, where the parasite wasp itself was parasitized by something else (the head is about .3 mm). Notice the hole in the wasps head where it's parasite emerged, as it emerged!:

For the macro freaks, are you using any flash filters? paper towel, plastic or anything to get better coverage over the bugs?
when i do mine, i use a paper towel folded over the flash like a cover, so most of the flash goes down, but covers the bug instead of blinding it out leaving flash spots.
i need to get my camera gear back from toronto, and pick up a 100mm macro, my canon 60mm just required me to get too dam close.

I use a Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce Diffuser:
http://www.amazon.com/Sto-Fen-OMEW-Omni-Bounce-Diffuser/dp/B000CLNHXY
Also, they are going to release the Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro soon (around twice the price of the standard 100mm macro), which has L-Series glass and image stabilization, nice upgrades from the original if money isn't a big issue (it is for me, haha). It looks like pre-order pricing is $1,049.99 compared to the current cost of about $650 for the standard 100mm Macro (got mine a year and a half ago new for ~$442).

Thanks! It's my latest body. I had a 350D for a long time, then a 400D for a brief time, and now a 5D. The IQ on the 5D is top notch and the viewfinder is a large improvement over the rebel line. I still want a viewfinder like my Olympus film body has though :(

Just got back home, still sorting out some 1,400 pictures I took. There were many great pictures of Albuquerque balloons including one below.
Anyone know of a photo service that can take original (4000x3000) image and make them into puzzles? Local shops like Walmart can do puzzle but it's a kiddie level set like 20 or 30 pieces. I want harder like 500 or even 1000 pieces.
PS anyone know of a photo kiosk that can do 1 hour printing, print to CD, and won't suicide on a 1,400 pictures 6GB job? :santa: I bet if I come to them on day after Thanksgiving for any Black Friday photo deal, anyone else trying to get their Thanksgiving photo will end up not getting theirs back for more than a few hours due to my large job. :D probably on a do not try list to annoying many customers and aggravate stores.

yes.
I use a Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce Diffuser:
i have this but not good for macro shots. i asked a lot of pro macro photog, but nobody said it was a good gear for macro, its better to make your own diffuser. and im +1000 for that.

I have a Nikon D90 and Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 on the way! I'm totally new to dSLR photography, but it recently captured the interest of my wife and me. I hope to share some decent photos soon! I'm really amazed by many of the photos in this thread. There are definitely some talented photographers here.

I got a panoramic phot as well: http://personalpages.tds.net/~wilykat/Hopi%20Point%20Panoramic.jpg
Over 3MB, it is a view of Grand Canyon from Hopi Point I took a week ago on my vacation. I don't know if current version of Photoshop can easily combine multiple shots into panoramic but I used Panorama Factory as it was fairly easy if you used tripod. Not perfect but easy. Ignore watermark, I hadn't paid yet. :P
The varying sky brightness is because of the way light plays from the atmosphere, it tended to be darker at the edge of the photo and when I combined the images, that resulted.

Was an intresting ride, a lil chilly but not bad at all. I stopped and chit chatted with Paul of rockstorephoto.com for a bit did a coupla passes to get my photo taken by him then stopped and chatting with some hells angles at the Snake lookout point. Then went and played on latigo canyon, came back to the Snake and passed the lookout point and went HEY HOLD UP... there was a 919 chillin there!
So i stopped and it happened to be a fellow wristtwister.com memmber. Mantelhonda nice guy.

Nice shots. I was using a program that came with my camera, Canon PhotoStitch, but clearly it doesn't do a very good job at merging. After reading your post, I tried photomerge in CS3 and got MUCH better results:

^ definitely much better. CS4 does an even better job at it, and in CS4 there is an option to remove vignetting before the photomerge, and its a godsend when using pics taken with my sd1000 cus it has a decent amount of vignetting.

Note the object reflections in the two bigger water drops. Cant tell what they are, but there is something there. Maybe hahaha can zoom in on the original, and crop it. A photographer friend of mine did this with a picture he took of his wife. He was taking a picture of a tear running down her face. In her eye was a perfect reflection of a window, which led to a second picture.

The red and white stripes in the drops are from a shirt I put behind the scene in order to add some color. The other object in the reflection is likely the water faucet I used to produce the drops! This was my first attempt at photographing a water drop in motion, hopefully I will get better over time (great way for a photographer to 'waste' time while trapped indoors during bad weather!).
Also, I can't be sure since this all happens faster than I can see, but I think the two lower 'drops' are actually air bubbles under the surface of the water.

Was checking out my new camera (last one died after 6 months, was a discontinued model so I got full refund) and one of the feature is the built in panoramic. I didn't think it'd do really well but it did far better than taking individual pictures and stitching them via software later.
This was taken in Chesaning, MI (about 8 miles west of I-75 near Flint) and the cascade fall looked nice.
This was taken at about 8:30 PM so it was past sundown. Still came out OK. Attached as zipped to preserve original image.

Was there last year. Did you go dwarf hunting?
One of my favourite bars is here (http://wizzmagazine.com/features/2008/feb/footloose-in-poland.html).
DOWN A DARK ALLEY
An inquisitive nose is an asset in Wroclaw, as is the temerity to brave scarily dark alleys. Delve into the dimly-lit passage off Swieta Antoniego and you'll be rewarded by discovering the popular student bar known as Kamfora (Ul. Sw. Antoniego 24c). An eclectic range of flavours including Bollywood and Nu Jazz could result in the improbable experience of coming to Wroclaw only to end up dancing Bhangra with footwear-eschewing Polish hippies. Track down Chill Out Klub (Ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego 45, tel: 071 344 5064) and Szepty Chillout Café (Ul. Ruska 47-48a, www.szepty.ovh. org) to complete a triumvirate of very well-hidden winners.

Here are three shots from my new finepix S1800. Not the best camera in the world, but for 125$ it was a good deal and should be a nice stepping stone for a real DSLR in 2-3 years down the road.
All shots were done in full manual as I am trying to learn how to take pictures the real way(not just using Auto mode LOL ;). They seem a bit noisy due to the high ISO I used which in that light, was probably not required. Full setting which were used can be found in the picture. Nothing was edited but resizing them.

Time to dig this old thread out of the grave...
I saw a flock of turkey this morning when I just got up.
Canon T2i, 2x Teleconverter, and a Samyang 500mm fixed telescope lens (with T-mount, no AF). I couldn't remember where I put the tripod and I wasn't quite awake so the image wasn't in perfect focus. Manual focus, tired eyes, long distance, forgetting to reduce aperture (bigger stop) due to bright light, and unsteady hands left me with about 50 blurry images. :-/
Looks like mating season started for turkey and soon most other animals. That means Spring is coming soon.

Photobucket should be a swear word! I HATE Photobucket!
With Photobucket, it's usually "This image or video has been moved or deleted." (or similar) or "Bandwidth Exceeded" (when that happens, they're forcing you to get a pay version)
Even if Flickr jumped the shark, it's still tons better than Photobucket.

Niiice. Long exposure?
Yes, I took 5 to 10 second exposures in the area I was seeing lightning. When a bolt happened during an exposure I would wait for it to end then stop the exposure immediately.

When you create your post on the advanced reply page, insert your attached pics into the post using the drop down arrow next to the attachment icon... That makes big pictures resize nicely.
I just did that for Polarys as an example.

Most likely, however the sad part is that I missed several good strikes while I was setting up... and several more after the rain started that I didn't have a covered vantage point for. One was very, very close, when I saw the flash it almost instantly shook my shop I was hold up in for cover.

Yeah, I ended up with about 5 decent shots and there were probably dozens of bolts I witnessed. None of them seemed to connect with the ground though, they were all cloud-to-cloud here. I actually took mine from my open bedroom window to stay out of the rain.
This was my first attempt at lightning pictures with my DSLR, so now that I have a technique down I'm just waiting for the next storm (hopefully tonight?)!

What camera are you using? I just upgraded from my Nikon D40x to a D5100, and the lens i used for those shots is a 18-70mm lens. I'm using the bulb setting in manual and holding the shutter open until a lightning strike happens in the field of view.
I have shot out of the doors several times, its just harder to frame shots that way. I'm hoping to catch a good storm while up in the Shenandoah National Park soon. Up on top of the mountain should make for some good shots.

I used my Canon Rebel XTi with a 50mm f1.8 lens. It is a decent camera, although a bit out dated now. I also used the bulb setting, basically just pointed my camera (on a tripod with a shutter release cable) to the area I had seen lightning and held the shutter open for up to 10 seconds. If I saw a bolt during that time, I closed the shutter immediately after. If I didn't see a bolt, I'd stop at 10 and start a new picture.
Next storm I'd like to go somewhere with a better background view, like over a lake or the Philadelphia skyline.
Here's an Infrared from Jamaica and a couple others.

Cyrix_2k: Great shots! I love japan. Lived there until I was 10 years old. You Army? AF here.
Also, I just got some MetalPrints from bayphoto.com and they are MIND BLOWING. They seriously look GORGEOUS. I got some of my stuff printed out on canvas last year, but these metal prints make the canvas stuff look totally amateur. I don't think I'll ever get prints on anything but aluminum again. You guys should definitely check them out. Don't worry, I'm not a paid spokesperson or anything, just a very very satisfied customer that wanted to share. :)

Lonewolf, think you can share what they look like in person?

I'll give it a shot, but it might be hard to capture it in a picture....kinda something you have to see in person. I saw a bunch of shots of them online from other people that had bought them, but when I got them in person they were WAY better than I expected. :)
EDIT: Here's a few shots. Both prints are 14"x21", and total cost was about $110 for both with shipping and their 25% off first time customer coupon code. Almost exactly the same price I'd pay for canvas prints. They come with "float mount" hangers which let the prints hang about 1/2" off of the wall. All shots taken with my Sony A55 and Minolta 50mm f/1.4 at f/4. Sorry about the glare, they are VERY glossy.

I typically use WHCC, but hear BayPhoto is the place to go for metallic prints.

Awesome place. I'm not army, I just borrowed army gear. The girl in the picture is stationed at camp zama and it was hers.

That wave shot is awesome. Thanks for sharing - I'm convinced that's what I'm going to do!

Actually, back in Hawaii on Oahu. From what I saw in LA, it's a little too green. :p
Actually, I retract my previous statement, it's more correct to say 'it was a little too muddy for LA'.
Here's a photo from Circle X Ranch in the Santa Monica mountains.

Now I see why my wife wants to goto Hawaii!! Ive just had a hard time justifying the cost to goto Hawaii when compared to going to an "out of country" island.

I guess it's a nice compromise if you want the convenience of traveling in the states. Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful place. But if it's the same price between traveling to Hawaii vs an 'out of country' island, I would find it a difficult choice...

I guess I should upload more 'visit Hawaii' pictures :)

2nd one is a flowering vine in my backyard; don't know what it is called but I think the flowers are pretty cool
