View Full Version : Volcano 6 Cu+ w/Soyo Dragon+
I was wondering, would the Volcano 6 Cu+ 7000RPM fan be suitable to plug directly into the motherboard's 3-pin connector? I hear it draws a lot of current and may fry or perm. damage the components, and you should plug into the PS. I have a Soyo K7V Dragon Plus, and an Athlon XP 1600+.
Or...if anyone has purchased this, does it come with one of those power supply cables where you can plug the 3 pin connector for fan statistics, while the power is drawn from the power supply? I heard the Volcano 7 comes with one of these cables (as shown in attachment)...
I have the same mobo and hsf fan and I connected the 3pin to the mobe and I have no problems. Been running for 2 months now.
Why would they include one of those cables in the Volcano 7, which only maxes out around 5000RPM, while the Volcano 6Cu+ tops at 7000RPM?
Did yours come with that patch cable to draw power from the PS rather than mobo?
You should connect the 6cu+ into the PSU because it uses more amps supported by motherboards and giving it a risk of frying your motherboard.
I think you need to buy the 3 to 4 pin converter because I bought a 6cu and it did not come with one and Tt packages the 6cu and the 6cu+ in the same box.

Has anyone actually blown a fan header with the 7k fan Volcano 6 ?
Why don't mobo makers get with it and provide solid headers for us?

Lots have. Read reviews mainly everyone states it.
Mobo makers are mobo makers they aren't responsible for cooling needs and stuff. 1% of AMD or Intel are overclockers they will not add 3 to 4 pin PSU connecters just for us. There about 1 buck not really expensive.

I read 100's of reviews.
Though reviewers claim you can blow a header- not one of them admits to blowing one themselves.
I'm running a Volcano Cu+, on a 1800+ with a KR7A motherboard, which is connected to the boards 3 pin.
My HSF did come with a 3 to 4 pin plug, but I haven't use it yet cause I wanted to monitor the RPM's.
So far no problems running off the motherboard, but the key words are "So far".

my friend blew his fan header on an MSI board by plugging in a Delta 38
Hehe there's an example for blowing the headers for you..

Thanks guys
:D
What do you mean "blew the fan header"? Is that just the 3 pin connector thing, or something worse like the motherboard components/fan components?
And btw, wouldn't a 3 to 4 pin cable have that plug so the status wire can still be plugged into the mobo, while the 2 power wires are connected to the power supply?

Nope, not all do.
At least in my limited experience, most don't have. I've only seen a couple of companies that stock them with that nice monitor plug, which is why I plan on ordering 3 or 4 to have on hand. Not to say this is uncommon, I just want some on hand cause I can't get them in these neck of the woods. :)

Try radio shack or a local computer vendor that sells some weak cooling parts your bound to find them.
Online too but I would save online for last since shipping is more than the thing itself.
Here's one place:
