View Full Version : How can I do a re-install of Win XP?
I've read references to being able to do fresh re-install of Win XP Home Edition, however I've also read this can't be done due to the built-in anti-pirating feature. I'd really like to do a fresh re-install but can't find any where how to do it. I've got an OEM copy of Win XP. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Boot to that CD (as long as your CDROM is set as a boot device before the hard drive) and follow the instructions. Choose to install a fresh copy of Windows XP when it gives you a choice.
You may be required to contact Microsoft for an activation key later in the install process...maybe not. You will need to your registration key, however. I've seldom used XP and when I did it was a Corporate Edition nt requiring activation.
If your setup has not changed and was recently activated it may not be necessary to do it again. Sorry, I'm just not very informed on the entire activation process with that OS.

I have re-installed my version of WinXP (Home ED) on a clean HD 3 times now and have not once had to call MS. I had a few set up issues the first couple of installs, so I kept doing it until I got it right, LoL. Maybe I was lucky, but no problems occurred with the activation.
I have also read you can re-install 3 times before having to call MS, or if you do a major hardware upgrade you might have to call them too.
To re-install just boot with the cd in the drive and go from there.
Good luck :)
I've already booted from the CD (not the hard drive) at least twice before only succeded in installing a non-functioning copy on my 2nd partition of my only hard drive (instead of over the original on my 1st partition). Now each time I boot the system asks me which operating system to use. I have no clue how to erase the whole thing and start over and now I probably can't. Since I have an OEM version, I believe Microsoft will only refer me to contact the OEM. I figure I'm pretty much stuck. Thanks for the replies.
