View Full Version : What size blue led to use?
Can someone please tell me which size blue led to use on:
1. DVD-ROM Drive, 3mm or 5mm
2. Floppy, 3mm or 5mm
3. Keyboard, 3mm or 5mm
4. Monitor, 3mm or 5mm
Also, instruction or link on how to install a 470ohm resistor. Do I need to use a 470ohm resistor for the above items, I know I need one for the 5mm blue case led. Thanks.

3mm for all of those.
I am sure that there are cases where the manufacturer uses 5mm, but I have yet to ever see that. Why don't you just check it out? If you are willing to solder in new leds, im sure you are brave enough to take it apart right?
your case LEDs are 5mm, other than that all other LEDs are 3mm...i think, just open them up and check it out
I guess I can use either size as long as it fit. The Aopen keyboard I have use 5mm leds, the pioneer dvd-rom has a very different looking led but a 3mm should fit, the sony fd trinitron monitor use a led slightly smaller size than 5mm but It's not as small as a 3mm. I just wanted to know what other people normally use and the answer is the 3mm led. Thank you both.

be very careful be4 u go taking everything apart, the monitor can give you a very bad shock if you arent careful.. and u could kill ur monitor trying to but a different led in.. most monitor leds are 2 color green/orange.. so a blue one might **** it up.. not sure, but be careful..

It depends, lots of floppy drives use 5mm leds but I've also seen them with rectangular leds, keyboards use different kind of leds (Modern KB's usually use rectangular leds) and so on and so forth, just have a look.
Bout the resistor, just solder it to one leg of the led (doesn't matter which leg, the longer leg is the positive leg, but if you've already cut the legs there are two other ways to tell what the positive and negative leg is 1] there's a flat side on the led that's the negative side, 2] If you hold the led against the light you'll see two "thingies" (anode and cathode) the small thingie is the positive side and the bigger "thi.......that's obvious).
Thanks for the safety warning, Dissolved. I heard about the deadly shock but I didn't know about the killing the monitor with a blue led. I will have to read more into this before I decide to mod the monitor. I should start with something simple like the drives and keyboard. Thanks again. :)
KILLorBE, I got what you said, I wouldn't know what size led to use before I took them all apart and look for myself. I was trying to save time by asking and now after check them out personally, I know the exact things to get and thanks alot for the resistor instruction, I've been looking everywhere for it. :)
start with a floppy that is least expensive part and easiest IMHO. I have done both but prefer the 5mm(t1 3/4) size to 3mm(T1). the NIC is another good starting point for modding. have fun and make sure they will fit before you solder! hint don't do what I do and just go for it.
In the monitor, it may use two different led's or one two-color led with 3 or 4 leads.
I took the easy way out and made all my led's green. They were free from work, and my CDRW (plextor 1232a) and Monitor ones were the two color rectangular ones. Besides, those blue ones are too bright for me to have 3 of them in my face whilst prowling the web.
Remember to unplug the power since if power gets to the monitor while your modding inside it you'll get a survere shock.
Happy modding.

Use SMT blue leds for your CD drives i removed the orange one from my Iomega and is now blue! (Red for burning)
You need a steady hand and lots of confidence! Take your time!
RS is the best place to get them! (In europe)
