Most people will suggest DDR2 since that's the current standard and it's not overly expensive, where as DDR3 is next gen and is a bit more expensive for a little more performance. DDR2-800 with a CAS of 3 or 4 is equal to that of DDR3-1600 CAS 6 or 7 i believe(somebody please correct me if I'm wrong). 780i has been good to many people, 790i seems like it is a minor step up.

My EVGA 790i Ultra and Corsair DDR3-1600(cas 7) will be arriving tuesday. :D And my Intel Q9450. :D :D

It's DDR.

DDR = Double Data Rate

790i is DDR3 only
780i is DDR2

Older boards are DDR, you cant really choose.

DDR2 is best price/perfomance.

Bang for buck/punch for pound etc.

I assume you're planning on SLI based on your choice of 780 or 790. Otherwise there are better (non-nvidia chipset) choices.

If money isn't a problem then I would suggest you go 790.

Personally, I'm trying to wait for the 780i FTW edition. If that takes too long, I'll be getting a 780i. The 790i, being limited to DDR3, isn't worth it in the end unless you have crazy money to put into a build now.
