View Full Version : Will a VGA monitor work on new computers?
Monitors these days are all SVGA. I was wondering if one got an old VGA only montor will it work on current new systems?
Like say a P 700 system, with like an ATI RAGE 128 32MB or a Geforce 2 MX cards?
If it works, what are the handicap I can expect from it?
I believe a VGA monitor will work with a modern computer, but you will only have resolutions up to 640x480, and possibly a max of 256 colors.
VGA supports up to 640x480 while SVGA maxes at 800x600 (I believe), and then there is XVGA (or XGA, or SOMETHING) with 1024x768. Haven't done much research on this, but I do know the VGA part...

Should work. Display resolution, screen size, color depth, pixel spacing, blah, blah, blah... all that will be lower quality than a newer monitor. I run a couple of monitors from early 90's for starting new systems. "Terrible" graphics, but I only need to see to install OS and occasionally bump up the FSB.
BTW, some (many?) games won't like running on an older one. My son tried to play B&W on one of the dinosaurs and it just couldn't support it.
