I'm a first time computer builder, and I decided to build a dual-processor system (am i stupid or what). All the numbers seem to check out ok, but i was wondering if a Tyan S2460 Tiger MP motherboard would run two AMD 1.4Ghz T-birds? I don't see why it wouldn't.

Here are the system specs (if it works):

Dual 1.4Ghz T-birds w/ dual dragon orb 3's
Radeon 8500
512 mg pc2100 RAM
19" monitor 1600x1200 @ 75hz
SB Live!
Creative Labs Inspire 5300 5.1 speakers
60gb 7200rpm ATA100
(soon adding SCSI)
XP Pro

Price including shipping: $1800

welcome to the forums.
i am not sure about ur motherboard becuz it says it supports MP's but i am pretty sure it would accept it anyways. btw, howcome ur getting a dual proc? if u r interested in overclocking seriously u might want to get an epox 8kha+ instead, plus it's much cheaper. This is just a suggestion however. Nice setup though.

Dual processors b/c I like to run a lot, and I mean a lot of progs at the same time. I would also like to be able to play the newest games, while running my chat and download progs.

Wouldn't dual processors be the fastest anyway? Espcially w/ dual t-birds?

I'm not sure about the mobo either, check their site yet? We have a few people with AMD duallies here, they'll know more about the boards.

As far as dual cpu systems: I am a fan myself, and they have a lot of advantages over single cpu systems, but it isn't going to be twice as fast! You will be able to run more apps simultaneously/ faster though, even if they are not smp-enabled. You will see the BEST benefits from apps that are smp, though.

My old 400 mhz duallie was the only pc I had that I could burn cds in without making coasters!

thanx....but what is mobo?:( :( :( :(

Sorry:D Forgot this part:

Welcome to the Forums!

Mobo= motherboard

another common one: hsf= Heatsink and Fan

There are a bunch of beginner's guides and articles on the front page here (http://www.overclockers.com) that may help you out too (if you haven't read them!)

Welcome to the forums funkdamonkman.

You should be able to run dual 1.4 athlons with no problems. My friend has 2 systems with that board and 1.4 athlons and both run great. At first we had problems getting the one to work with 2 1.4s but once we tried a different cpu things worked fine. For some reason the 2 chips didn't like to work in the same board. If you want some decent heatsinks I reccomend the SVC Goldengate (http://svcompucycle.com) since they are cheep yet very efficient coolers. A decent 400 watt psu is also something you should concider. Antec is probably the best 400 watt out there. I hope the dualies work out for you.

Thanks a lot....um...i already bought the coolers, and i got dragon orb 3's w/ a copper base. Will these work? I got a 400w antec power supply, and I have an antec case w/ 4 case fans (2 front & 2 rear). Am I set?

that's why i asked u why you wanted a dual proc system. it is a common mistake that can cost u alot of money.

Sounds like you have everything under control. The dragon orbs should be fine for your system. I just wish you could overclock that system.

T-Birds.... those are AMD right?

on TomsHardware.com they had a vid clip of testing CPUs. they tested 2 Intel Pent 4's and 2 AMD Ghz chips.

Running Quake 3, they took the Heat Sink and the Fan off of each one.

the AMD chips would be white hot and burning themselves and the motherboard.

the Intel chips would Throttle down - Causeing the system to crash, but still save the hardware.

if tempature is a concern (and it should be with 2 Ghz chips) then you may want to consider Intel in this instance.... although i allways root for the underdog.

Would I be able to overclock on this mobo? I wasn't planning to at first b/c i know that this system is already going to run hot, and I wouldn't need any more speed.
