I just installed a new IBM 75GXP hdd that i had from last year. its a 30 gig. I have it on the same ata100 channel as my Western digital harddrive. For some reason like once a week windows tells me the wd harddrive has an unreadable file system and must be formatted. I have windows XP on a abit be6-2 rev1.2 and a celeron 1.0@1.33. can some please help me out?

Could be several things. I'd say replace the cable to check that. I was about to toss out a WD 30 gigger (other thread (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55299)) until I figured out I had a bad cable. Might still be a dying drive, but easy to check by trying a different cable.
I'm unfamiliar with that motherboard. Does it have a 1/4 PCI divider at 133? If not, the PCI bus being out of spec may be causing the problem. Or CPU overheat. Or NB overheat. Etc.

yeah it has a 1/4 divider so the PCI bus is running in spec. the AGP bus is running at 89mhz. Ill try a new cable. do you know hwo much the ata66/100 ide cables usually cost? I used to be running the WD drive as my main hdd and it worked great. not until i put in the IBM drive did i start getting these crazy problems. And windows freezes a LOT now, telling me theres corrupt files and i need to run chkdsk also i get BSODS telling me my nv4_disp file is scrwd up and since i just moved and i dont have my cable connection back up, I am forced to use AOL. AOL 7.0 freezes like crazy too. I just did a clean format 3 days ago and reinstalled winxp.

Just a quick note about your AOL 7.0 comment I had the same problems when I loaded it for the first time. I have since reloaded the machine with another drive and downloaded it the other day so far without problems. If you remove it be careful it will take a lot of stuff with it. Removing it will screw up your IE 6.0 setup .
just my 2 cents , Billy

oh thanks. maybe if i re-download AOL it will work. Is there any way to download an executable or a zip file instead of just the automated updater thing? I am formatting all my drives and hopefully picking up new cables tomorrow.

I don't know what the regular price is elsewhere, but in my price-inflated town I paid something like $8. Much cheaper to buy online, but if you need it fast, local has it for more (here, anyway).
My drive didn't start screwing up until I installed a second, also. Think that's probably when I broke the cable, or else aggravated it enough to begin causing problems. It also wated to run a scandisk (thorough) whenever I restarted.
A cable is a cheap, easy way to check it. And it never hurts to have a spare around if that's not what it is. :)

ok theres a local pc place like 5 miles from my house. I really hope this fixes my problems.
My dad's computer was getting the same problem.
It was a HP Mini tower with a major design flaw... the fan from the powersupply blew instead of out of the PC, it blew straight across the mother board.
Once i put it in a new case, gave him a new HD and Ram then it ran great.
But bad mem can easily cause your PC to write files and file information incorrectly.
another thing is that you're useing Win XP. Whenever you do a "Hardware Rebuild" windows XP keeps track of this. if you change your hardware too often then windows XP will consider itself a pirate copy and corrupt itself on purpose. just another example of Bill Gates thinking he doesn't have enough money.

well i dont think its a cooling problem. I have 3 case fans not including the on ein the power supply. also one on the vidcard and cpu. but daaamn i think you are right about the xp corrupting itself thing. because i just recently installed a lot of new hardware. I just got the celeron and the harddrive. and i have switched out different harddrives 3 times this week because i had to transfer a lot of my files. Will formatting fix this problem?
It's probably the drive itself. Check to see if it was made in Hungary. I believe that IBM has a utility that should get it running again, but it's hard to tell and anything on it will be gone. anyway. They 75 GXPs had a very high drive failure rate compared to other drives. I lost one(30GB) out of two(the working one is 45GB). Got it running again but lost everything that was on it. Storagereview.com used to have a very good hard drive reliability database and forum, but they lost everything recently. Odd that a storage review site would lose everything, but that's the way it goes. Hopefully they get it back as I think it was probably related to restoring a backup and the database helped me to pick a new drive. It showed how high the failure rate actually was for the 75GXP drives. I think it was about 30% within the first year.

oh man that really sucks, i dont really mind about losing everything on the drive because i have a secondary hdd for all my files and other junk. i just want this thing to work properly. do you know where i can find that utility? would it be on IBM's website?
just had some probs with my drives, so i know what you're going through, hehe . . . yes, you can get the prog from ibm's website, it's called disk feature utility, i think. you d/l the file and it makes a boot disk for you. you boot off the floppy and then you can test your hd. also, i foudn out that my data was getting corrupted because of my mem settings, the puter just couldn't take 1t command rate in the bios.

i just finished reading an article in the new maximum pc and they've put the 75gxp hard-drive in the "dog house" which is a section of the magazine dedicated to exposing problem equipment and they recommend against purchase. their is currently a lawsuit against ibm for this drive and several of the editorial staff have had multiple drives fail. i personally have no experience with this drive but i'd probably take it back.

oh man i didnt realize this thing is that scrwd up. I bought it about 6 months ago from an online vendor and just now got around to installing it. I dont know if they would take it back. do you recommend i talk to ibm about this or the place where i bought it from? and i think im incompetent cuz i cant find the 'disk feature utility' thing on ibm's website. can someone give me a link? thanks
yup. Just had to 75 gxps blow here at work.
Death battle with ibm to get new drives. They are "out of stock" at the moment.

Good man. A maximum Pc reader. I have been scrolling through this thread trying to see who would finally answer his question. Fellas DO NOT BUY AN IBM 75 GXP HARD DRIVE! They are defective. The 60GXP is ok (so far).
