Not to lead you around by the hand or anything... but this is a story, originally linked to on Penny-Arcade, by Tom Chick about Europa. He writes about a lot of strategy games (you can click on his name and find links to some of his other stories) and every story I've read so far has been really good.

Worth checking out.

Yes it's highly uncharacteristic of you to not describe something in nauseating detail.

It's a story. A damned good story. It was linked to on Penny Arcade ( http://www.penny-arcade.com ) yesterday morning.

I just figured some people around here actually... you know... READ.

I'm sorry that I didn't know about a story on some obscure website that I've never heard of before.

I'm sorry that I didn't know about a story on some obscure website that I've never heard of before.

It's a story based on the game Europa Universalis. It was linked to from a game site, Penny Arcade, yesterday. It was so good (Did you even read it?) I figured I'd share it. So it's on topic... unlike you who's just complaining to be complaining. :)

It wasn't bad but I've never played Europa Universalis and you didn't offer any explanation of it. So I'm surprised that you weren't expecting me to be utterly confused.

Rainless I do read..

I just dont read every online web comic daily that is out there and get references to some utterly obscure game I have never heard of.

Hey... I was just sharing the damned game related story. If you don't want to read it then don't read the damned thing. But don't get all up in my ass about it either.

(Sorry for the double post.)

and makes the rest of us look really weird...

well I didnt need any help looking weird but still.

Rainless I wasnt getting up in anything with my response, you came out saying "sorry that you dont read etc...", I responded to that to tell you that, that is in fact false and I do. Without a bit of explanation on what you linked to, it seemed a bit of a random pointless thread.

Isn't Europa Universalis some Civilization knockoff from like 10 years ago?

Go read this, Rainless http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/7575/wc4.html

After doing some digging of my own this article is actually about a new game called Europa Universalis: Rome, but I haven't heard about it until now. Apparently it's coming out at the end of this month. There is a demo here: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/europauniversalisrome/download_6188676.html

There was just a version of Europa Universalis last year (I believe it was Europa Universalis III: Napoleon's Gambit). There's a Europa Universalis this year.

Chances are there'll be another Europa Universalis either next year or the year after

It's the last of the hardcore strategy games and the ONLY non Civ, non-realtime strategy game that still gets reviews written about it in magazines.

@Andraga... Andrago... Bah you know who you are:

Well sorry if I got defensive, Hardin has a way of PUTTING people on the defensive. ;)

Thanks Hardin - I found the demo on Gamershell.com:

I have Napoleon's gambit... NO IDEA how to play it. It comes with an instruction manual the size of a bible. :p

I bet - I don't how long this would take to learn.

I tried playing the demo for this game. I think the word complicated doesn't begin to describe it.

I tried playing the demo for this game. I think the word complicated doesn't begin to describe it.

I don't know if the demo comes with a tutorial... but the tutorial takes a LOT off the learning curve. I'm playing Napoleon's Ambition and I think the tutorial is probably longer than most games.

That said... it's also REALLY well done. They walk you through every single icon in the game and thoroughly explain what everything does. Then they set you up with some test missions.

Like I said... Europa Universalis has been around for a WHILE. And it's really made for the strategy game hardcore... for the people who felt Civilization was too ARCADEY.

There was Europa Universalis... a hundred different add-ons and expansions for that... then the same thing with II... III... I guess Rome is just an expansion of III since it doesn't get it's own number... and three came out about a year or two ago.

So people have been playing a long looooooooooooooong time.

Try the tutorial if it comes with the demo. The deserve a reward for that alone.

No it doesn't come with a tutorial. It starts right at the beginning of the Punic Wars and you start losing providences left and right.

You basically have to pause the game (by hitting spacebar) and slow down time so that you have time to figure out what the hell you're doing. You can check on your provinces and issue commands while the game is paused. It's actually real-time and it plays a lot like a realtime Civ.

I can't believe that some of you had no clue what this game was. It's made by Paradox Interactive, a Swedish game maker, they develop and publish their own and other games. They make some pretty amazing games and have a fairly large following throughout the video game community.

So really, you guys shouldn't be upset with the OP because you haven't heard of the game, you should be upset with yourselves~
