im going to have to buy an amd :(
this sux
ive recently had to pay for an expensive hospital stay and now i have very little money to get a northwood :(. i cant afford it right now but yet i need to get a server computer up for an upcoming lan party im hosting.
i was going to buy a northwood/mobo/memory and use the processor/mobo/ram out of this computer in the server (i have the rest of the parts already).
but i cant afford the northwood anymore.
well im going to hafta buy an amd :(.
a few questions.

Whats the best Motherboard for overclocking/speed? (or the best upcomming one that will be released before feb.)
Will that motherboard support newer .13micron cpus when they come out?
Whats the best athlon for overclocking? stepping?
Best ddr ram for an xp? (i want 2 sticks of 512mb ram but i dont beleive they are made with a fast timing, prove me wrong if im not correct)
and finally whats the best heatsink for an athlon?
Note: i dont want to go h2o. air only. but a pelitier is fine. so would a swiftech be a good bet for a heatsink?

*smacks self for getting sick and having to resort to the amd side*
oh well. im still gonna buy a northwood when i can afford it though :p

So first you come in here and start insulting AMD...then ask for our help??? I don't get some people...

people do the same thing in the intel threads (ex. INTEL SUX! amd rules!, now how do i oc my new p4?!?)
u should be happy that im going amd though, lol.
a hardcore intel person gets an amd, that has to be an accomplishment, lol.

Epox 8kha+ dont know about further CPu support but i think it should support it *crosses fingers* get as much ram as you want.....corsair if possible...

dude, i have tried it. the processor went up in smoke and took out the mobo, videocard, hdd, and ram with it.
thats why i went strictly intel
but now cuz of the hospital bill i cant afford it at the moment but i need a fast computer before feb :(

I didn't mean any harm...was just saying. Sorry to hear about the hospital bill. Shuttle makes a great board, the AK31 rev 3.1. You can get it here (http://www.newegg.com) for $80. For a HSF go for the millennium glaciator II. As for RAM, get the best kind of DDR you can afford (crucial PC2100, or kingmax PC2700)

Hope this helps and makes amends!

How exactly did that happen?

the Shuttle would be a good choice, as alot of ppl have OCed their chips pretty high on this board. I would suggest maybe some sticks of 256MB DDR, as 512MB is pretty expensive (at least it was last time I checked). Just one suggestion, whatever HSF you get, don't put a too powerful fan on the motherboard fan header (just remember some of the replies of your thread, ppl said your fan was too power-draining, and that'S what blew the fan header. Just my suggestions, as it would be really horrible that the same thing happens again

i wont make that mistake again :p
and i think the motherboard i had was faulty too. because i checked the amperage that the fan used and what was supplied through the header and i had .3amps of headroom.
and the northbridge shouldnt have fried like it did on my mobo.
oh well.
whats a good stepping of xp and where are the amd processors made and who has had most luck with which processor?

Steppings that have "Y" as the first letter or number on the third line of the text written on the CPU die are the best, but I know some stepping, I htink AKG** are the best (the * are supposed to be numbers or letters that I don'T remember). I think the best person got 2.853GHz or something like that out of his XP1800+, but he used watercooling and 3x220volts peltiers

do any amd boards have a feature like on the Gigabyte Tualatin board? the turbo pll thing that keeps the pci in spec no matter the fsb?

ovbiously you havent heard of my past expereince. i swore to myself id never buy another amd until they solve their heat problem. but bills have decreased my funds and i need a fast computer so i gotta go back to the company ive learned to hate cuz of heat. oh well.
i am still getting a northwood, and thats going to be my main machine :p but now i need a fast machine and i cant afford northwood right now.

well back to questions. since uve never heard of that feature.. do any amd boards have a 1/5 and 1/6 divider?
and will that shuttle board support the .13 micron amds when they come out?

it depends on which one you get, I think I remember ppl talking about a mobo that had 1/5 divider, maybe 1/6, not sure.

bah, u beat me to my edit, lol
well does that shuttle board have a high divider? (1/5) and will it support the .13 micron cpus?

well i just got paid for some computer stuff i sold and i was thinking about This (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/swiftechmc462a.html) for my heatsink (on sale for $59! :)). and a few days ago i ordered a 550w enermax psu (which will be here tommrow) so now i can put like a 120w peliter on there.
btw would that swiftech hsf fit on that shuttle board?

No way of saying for sure, but your odds of future compatibility are better with AMD than Intel. AMD seems to have been planning for the future when they chose socket A. And look how long they stuck with socket7. Intel seems to feel the need to go with a different type of interface with every new CPU generation.

Someone said it should support 1/5 divider, as the board has FSB ajustments up to 166MHz

Take a read. I like this board and CPU combo. IT's doing some nice stuff for being such a cheapo. You should find the board on www.newegg.com

What did you do to fry your AMD system? I have been building them for a few years now(since the first k6 days) and never ever burned one up. I am glad to see you give them another shot, I bet you will be impressed. There are a couple of mobo's that have the 1/5, 1/6 divider in them "unofficially". It seems they kick in at 166 or so. As far as ram goes, I have 512 MB of crucial that really flies with anything I throw at it.

There was a voltage spike that killed his chip, the mobo, the hard drive, the memory, video card, and fan

"kill me now"... *loads his shutgun... takes an aim... FIRES!* j/k
I bet u will like the AMD side no worse than the Intel side, AMD has really powerfull CPUs and the costs of the whole systems are much cheaper and have better performance.. AMD chips are easier to O/C as well. just unlock the multiplier and you are FSB independant... Good luck and welcome!

Tom's Hardware has a good KT266A motherboard shootout article. Check over there for good reviews of 12-15 boards. My Soyo seems to be a damn fast board.

if you get the Epox it has the 1/5 1/6 devider cuz you can go to 200 which is a 400FSB
