Someone told me to come here and ask you guys this questions because it seems everyone at hardocp just knows the basics of computing. Here is my situation. I would like it built a very very quiet computer. I have looked into two possibilities, the first was kryotec, but they cost a little to much for me and the second was koolance. The problem with Koolance's newest units were that the fans became very loud after some parts just began to get warm. So that was also out of the question.

Here are the specs to my computer so far:
Athlon XP1700
Abit KG-7 not raid
liteon 24x cd-rw
artec 16x dvd
1 gig of ram maybe 512 with the prices going up
sound blaster live X-gamer
80gb WD hard drive
ati radeon ViVo (need to capture stuff in mpeg2)

I have not picked out a case or a power unit yet because I need to find a quiet case and a quiet power supply. What can I do, please I have been looking for some time now and everyone tells me the only way to get a quiet computer is to get a name brand computer (which I do not want to do).

Please you help is greatly appriciated.

I just want a quiet system all around, the fans are my main issue. The hard drives are taken care of the fans are my problem.

The ones on the heatsink, inside the powersupply and possibly any other fans I might need. I need them to be very quiet

I'd say go with water cooling, and if it's still for some odd reason too loud, get some of that Sonex foam stuff, it works wonders on the inside of a case.

I don't know just how quiet you need the system to be, but I have one of my air-cooled athlons running quiet enough to be a non-issue at my house:

Chengming tower case
4 Sunon 80mm case fans
hsf: don't know: bought at a flea market! but it is alum, and about 50% longer than most standard design aluminum sinks- which gives me room for 2 4500 rpm fans side by side.

This setup is on a Athlon 900@1068 less than 2 feet from me now and I can hear it, but barely.

The case fans and heatsink and fans were bought at a flea market, labels obliterated at this point so I can't tell you exactly what they are.

Isolate the HDD's w\ rubber faucet washers. This tactic almost eliminates drive noise.

With an Xp1700 running at stock, I would use an Alpha 8045 with a Panaflo L1A 80mm fan and then duct the hot air straight to a rear exhaust fan. Get a big case with an Enermax Whisper-Quiet PSU and a front intake. If the front fan is too loud, change it to another Panaflo or change the voltage to 7v.

If you want silent however, you might be better off with Intel (P3 or Celeron) since they run much cooler than AMD.

IF you want a quite PSU go with a Antec. As for casesas far as I know there is no quite case. IF you don't want to watercool then look for the best fans with the lowest DBA`s or when you done building soundproof the case.

This is for you then.

Should be very useful when choosing the right fan(s).
