I was looking into getting a quiet hard drive and I was wondering if the WD 80gig 7200rpm drive is quiet. I also heard that segate makes quiet drives to. Is any of this true?
Noise levels for the WD800BB are respectably low, though not as whisper-quiet as its predecessor. Similarly, due to its platter count and reduced access times, the drive runs much warmer to the touch… almost hot after extended heavy use outside of a drive cooler in our smallish testbed case.
Most all newer drives are quiet compared to the drives made over 2 years ago.

I have a Maxtor and a WD, and the WD is by far more quiet than the Maxtor. I had IBM once too and nothing but noise and problems with it, but maybe I was just unlucky...some people swear by IBM, not me though.

I have a couple of 20 gig 5400 rpm maxtors, and they are super quiet. I can't hear them at all, usually. Similarly, I have a 30 gig 5400 rpm WD  (long story) and that one is equally quiet. They really couldn't get more silent.
My 13 gig maxtor 7200 is somewhat louder, it is a year older than the rest. Of course, I thought that was super quiet when I bought it...
