Hi,

I put together a little file server a while ago in my old antec case with AMD1800+ computer. I put 2 X 500gig Seagates in RAID1. This is where I keep my files and backups. The computer also has a WD 120gig hard drive from which I run the OS.

I went to check the temperatures to see that 1 hard drive is at 50C, while the RAID1 drives are at 49C. This is too hot.

The case isn't the best, but that's all I have to work with, I need ideas on how to improve the temperature fast!

The reason why it's so hot is probably because 3 drives are right next to each other in the internal 3.5" bays.

Any help is appreciated.

Kind regards!

Airflow over the drives is a must. If you have any way of opening some holes in the case around the drives (or better yet, make a hole for a fan)..

Edit: This was my 3000th post.

You might try to relocate those drives to 5 1/4 bay to spread em out..

That's certainly an option. Many (most?) online computer stores sell 3 1/2 " to 5 1/4" drive rails specifically for this purpose and they're fairly cheap.

Separate the drives and get some airflow on them.

Either put one or two drives in the 5.25 bays using converters, or junk the case and get an inexpensive Coolmaster case that has enough spacing between the drives, better fans and airflow for starters. A Coolmaster Centurion would set me back around $50.

I'm for modding the case :)

It's certainly the more fun/hardcore option :D

I moved everything to a Centurion 5 case, spread the drives out (one 3.5 bay apart), for $50 I got the temps down to 31C and 27C. Case was a cake to work with.

Thanks!

Nice fan mod, I am thinking of doing something similar. :)
