The 3850 From Ati has been getting the "best bang for buck" from many review sites, as well as the proof from futuremark in regards to 3dmark testing. However the card appears to run very hot, as reported almost everywhere.

Those whom own one, is the stock cooling solution a problem? Is this what is causing the overheating? I was thinking the power this thing gives for being a single slot card is amazing. Yet I hear the overheating issues only being fixed by using aftermarket cooling making this a 2 slot video card.

As far as the 3850, which manufacturer do you reccomend?

My Powercolor AGP version has a 2 slot cooler as standard and hasn't yet gone over 70 degrees C, at 800/1000(2000ddr). So no probs there.
Get one with a decent copper cooler and You'll be right.

all u got to do is update your bios or if u dont want to risk it use a 3rd party program to speed up your fan...rivatuner or atitool...in that order..then the heat problem is no issue =)

Get a dual-slot heatsink with your 3850. I had a single slot 3850 256mb and it would reach temps of mid 70's *C @ 70% fan speed while my new 3850 512mb with a dual slot cooler will hardly ever each mid 60's *C @ 50% fan speed. The first one was a Powercolor, this second one is GeCube.

Gecube OC. Dualslot heatpipe cooling, do not think I have seen it go over 55C

Update the bios of the video card? Where do u get that at? I see you have the same card as me chrome. I checked visiontek's site didn't see anything. Just seems like my card runs hot also.

My single slot diamond 3850 runs cool, even with a ****ty case with no airflow.

Got links? The 9600GT is far and away best bang for buck right now, unless the 3850 dropped below $90 when I wasn't looking..

Mosto f the 3850 reviews I've seen have demonstrated this. At any rate, he's not out to prove something, he's asking a question

He is under the wrong impression. 3850 is not best bang for buck. If it is, I'd like to see some links to these reviews..

Please keep the nvidia fanboyism to the nvidia forums bud. We're talking about ATI stuff, and yes it has a good bang for buck, especially with the lower price and CF performance.

Calling me names won't change anything. I simply asked for him to show me these links to the reviews.

I'm here both to learn, and to help people. When someone has a mistaken idea about something, I do my best to educate them, while keeping my mind open to the fact that I may be the mistaken one.

Don't try to turn this into a Nvidia vs ATI thread, noone needs one of those.

I am not calling you names. I'm indicating that we don't need this kind of behaviour in a thread that is CLEARLY asking for information on the 3850. If you 'need' proof, a good idea would be to PM the OP. Until then, please don't threadjack.

I see. Common sense and logic need not apply in the ATI subsection?

Fine.

How does this contribute to the topic? he wanted to know 3850 temps, not what nvidia fanboys think of ATI stuff...

Back on topic, the Palit 3850 my friend ordered seems to run much cooler than mine even! ( http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=28376&vpn=AE%2F38500XHD22&manufacture=Palit%20Multimedia%20Inc%2E ) It looks crappy but the cooler seems to do a good job. He was getting around 10 c lower than me at load.

There are plenty of reviews that would indicate that there is enough of a difference, especially with the price drop. However 3850 and 3870 are also a good combo, AND you save money. Probably the best bang for buck there.

Before the 9600gt, in about late jan. early feb. when i bought mine every review had it as a best bang for the buck. Because at that time is way by far the best bang for your buck at a 160ish price range for the cheapest brands.

Yes now the 9600gt is the best bang. GG

btw i asked earlier about the bios update thing? is there some sort of update for the 3850?

Sure, Sure

Let me show you the best bang for buck. It came from 3dmark. It shows the 3850 with its extreme overclockable ability getting more 3dmark scores vs $$$

I actually ended up buying a MSI 3870

This died.

I hate moderating stuff like this. Maybe I should just ban everyone involved.
