View Full Version : POWER, i need more power...
i've been having troubles with my radeon for awhile now until recently i disabled the acpi and my video card got its own irq, now after rebooting i noticed things are faster overall. Heres my problem though, my 5v line use to be at 4.7 or so, i know thats a little low.
i got 2 burners, 2 hdd's, a floppy, a NIC, a video card, a sblive, and a controller hooked up, the speakers have their own amps built in. Anyway after i switched off acpi under HEAVY load, encoding in nandub and playing a little counterstrike at the same time, my 5v line dropped to
4.3v!?!
it locked up counterstrike, the whole system for that matter, and when i rebooted i turned off agp 4x, may have been a cause to it cause i turned it on when i switched off acpi. Then in bios i looked at my cpu temp, 48C!
The only time i had it that hot was when i first got the board/chip and i was burning it in and the ASII was still evening out. Usualy its around 36-42 or so. what can i do?
i've got a 300W psu that came with the case. I'm thinking of a new psu but not sure what to go with and if that would even solve my problems.

300W is the minimum, but I don't think that most 300W PSs would do that. If nobody else comes up with anything, I'd suggest a mosfet mod (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51160).
Something is definitely wrong, though, and I'd wait for some other advice before trying the mods.
I've unplugged my 8x burner, 15gig hdd, lowered my chip to 133x9@2-2-2 an dropped to 1.8v and i've got it to around 4.66v at idle. I'm gonna go for a new power supply, most likely a enermax 431w from newegg. Anyway is there anyone that thinks that the PSU isn't the problem?
i've been running at 135mhz for about 5months now@2-2-2, and the iwill go's up to 200 for the fsb so i definately havent fried anything on the board, once i get this 5v line fixed i' think i'll be able to hit 1.6ghz with this wbk38 on here, gonna go for a custom vapochill type unit:)

When shopping for a PS. What "I" have noticed is that the 350, 400W PS units are pretty good.
What you are looking for is a +5v line amperage of 30a or more.
They run a few $ tho.
For me, doing the 5v mosfet mod was the trick I needed. I can't believe everyone doesn't do this. but if you're stable with a good PS why bother? right?
It's pretty easy to do, and doesn't take long. You just need a good steady hand:eek:
Good Luck.

Good idea. I recommend going to a second hand store and buying some old stereo to take apart so you don't mess up anything useful.
As for the PS, pretend like it's Bill Gates. Just make sure that it's at fault first. :D

HEHE, who don't need more power? I have my crappy PSU putting out a meer 4.81 MAX on full load and 1.85Vcore, almost all the time my machine won't even restart, it will lock up and it will BSOD me. I hate my PSU, I don't have much money, so my guess is I'll get a noname 400W PSU, I hope its a GYRO the same I have on my Duron, 800 @ 1048 @ 1.9Vcore, the V lines are rock stable no to very litle flunctuation of the lines... And its a 300W and the 5V line is at 4.92-4.95 avg.
i got a 400w antec...pp-412x
the thing brought my 5v line upto 4.7-4.8 with everything on. i dont get it, thing should be at 5v in all reality. posted in nother thread about how to adjust it to adjust it to get 5v

I had a similar problem with my new Enermax 431W PSU. The 5V line dipped down below 4.7 and I could not complete Prime 95. I modded my PSU and added a pot as per the below thread and I am now totally stable. In addition, I now have the flexibility of adjusting the 5V line up 5.25V+ (if needed). When I get brave (and some time - holiday season is so hectic), I am going to push the envelope as much as I can.

Here are 2 threads that deal directly with the ANTEC PSU and adjusting the pots.

I have solved my Epox 5v problem!! You can do it too! (http://www.amdmb.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=50719)
Good luck
