So today I decided to give bit torrent a shot after a co worker was talking to me about it. So I go down load and install it then do a search for some bit torrents. Right then and there my net lags. I do a quick restart and the same thing. Then I decide to restart my modem and router. Instantly goes back to like normal internet speeds. After a few moments its slow as all hell again and sometimes times out.

So I figure its the bit torrent and uninstall it. Same thing. I need to restart my modem and its only good for a few minutes before it gets really slow again. I then thought maybe it was a coincidence and hope it clears up through the day, but its been the same all day if not worse.

So could installing bit torrent have changed some setting that is causing all the net connections to slow down in my house? Maybe my modem is taking a dump?

The odd thing is, it does not seem to be affecting WoW. I log on to wow easily with very good ping and no interruptions. It just seems to be affecting everything else. Specifically web pages and I'm getting logged off vent.

any ideas?

so it seems to be my router. I removed my router and hooked up my pc strait to my modem and it has been working perfect since my first post. Going to hook the router back up and snoop around.

I found that the stock firmware on my Linksys WRT54GL didn't handle bittorrent very well, but after putting a good aftermarket firmware, it does great (I'm using Tomato (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) and it works great)

Of course, I don't know what router you are using and if you could possibly put a custom firmware, but...eh. :)

Im using a linksys wrt54g and DD-WRT and have been for a long time now. I went into my router setting and just did a master reset. It does not seem to have helped.

Are you guys saying bit torrent does mess with my router some how? Is there a way to reverse the changes it made? I do not plan to use the program anymore.

Bittorrent opens a large number of connections which afaik some routers cannot cope with. I have a cheap old router somewhere that doesn't cope at all with bittorrent. My newer ADSL D-Link copes fine.

How do I close those connections back up? I do not plan to use bit torrent again.

I figured it out. There was a executable BTDNA.exe running that I wasn't familiar with. I googled it and found that bit torrent installs that along with the actual program. And of course does not remove it when you un-install bit torrent. Removed it and rebooted. I am now good to go.

uTorrent is a good stand alone client that doesn't install uneccasary exe's.
