View Full Version : HDD click on boot only

I just bought two 500GB Seagate HDDs and on boot they make a clicking sound for a couple seconds. I only hear the sound on post, not after system starts. At least I think it's the drives (I'm not 100% sure it's the HDD but what else would it be?).
Anyway, I'm using these drives for file storage and not OS install. Everything seems to be working ok and the tests I ran with HDTune, HDTach, Speedfan etc. all seemed ok. Do I have anything to worry about?
Thanks for the advice!
Unplug the power to the drives then turn the machine on to see if its the drives that click.
If no click then plug one drive in and boot
If no click plug second drive in and boot.
If one of the drives is the culprit, I would run some diagnostics on it.

Run speedfan in-depth scan on the drives. That usually will help solve those mysteries.

Ok, I found one of the two drives is doing the clicking. I might send it back to Circuit City just to be on the safe side.

Here are the speed fan results. I also completed a HDTune and SeaTools complete sector scan and other tests without any problems.

I have a drive that is clicking and the Raw Read Error Rate is in the red. I'd say that's your problem. It's probably starting to die.

Here is the other hdd (it's the exact same drive model for my mirror backup)

Also, here is my WD Raptor 150GB:

Any input on these would be great too.

Any opinions on those stats?

Raptor looks fine. Now that I see the other drive, I'd say that the values are off, and that the drives are good. I'd go back to what CGR said:
Unplug the power to the drives then turn the machine on to see if its the drives that click.
If no click then plug one drive in and boot
If no click plug second drive in and boot.

If it is clicking send it back, no point in taking a chance. You paid for a quality item, and thats what you should get.

try a diff plug from your PSU?
but i would take them back, i own about 8 500G segate drives (mostly for work) from 7200.10 to ES2 drives and none have ever clicked on boot.

Thanks for the help guys. I've singled it out and it's the HDD as I figured. My PSU seems fine so I'll be returning this baby soon.

make sure you try to wipe as much data as you can off of it ;)
segate will most likely re condition the unit and sell it back out on the market

I DLed Darik's Boot and Nuke (http://dban.sourceforge.net/). Do you think this is good enough to destroy the data?
