Wow the past year seem to have flown by and it's already time for another Chimp Challenge! For those of you new to OCF or the Team 32 folding team, for the past two years we have had a race against the Maximum PC folding team. It originally started as our folding_monkeys subteam against their spider_monkey subteam, but it quickly turned into a team-wide race on both sides! So many people joined in the first one that we had to up the target points for the second race, and will most likely do so again this year. I linked the official challenge threads for the previous races below.

Chimp Challenge '06 (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=454314) winner = MaxPC
Chimp Challenge '07 (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=505857) winner = overclockers.com

That means we're 1-1 so this year will put one team ahead of the other. And that team gets (or retains) possession of the coveted Jaded Monkey for the next year. The loser must guard the cursed monkey paw for the next year.

Help us keep our Jaded monkey!
http://www.ocforums.com/image.php?u=51351&dateline=1179757434

To participate in the Chimp Challenge and help your fellow OCFers, run the folding@home client like normal, whichever you like, and use the username "T32monkeys" and of course, team name is still 32 :D

Challenge Rules:

1. First team to accumulate 5,000,000 points from the start time wins.

2. Start time for the contest is May 5th at 12pm noon, Pacific Daylight Time.

3. The victor gets to claim the lucky jaded monkey as the prize. Tales have been told of untold wealth and fame that comes with this. The victorious team is allowed to display in any honorary fashion the jaded monkey, the losing team is forbidden to display it. The losing team is bestowed the dreaded monkey's paw, which is said to be cursed. People have been known for have very bad luck with this paw

4. Team captains are as follows: sno.lcn from overclockers, KingFish from MaxPC, Xilikon from [H]ardOCP, and mitsimonsta from OCAU.

5. In the event of a close race, the Stanford site will be considered the official source for points information.

6. Only with a consensus of the team captains are changes allowed to be made of the rules.

7. Team names are:
OC -T32monkeys (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=235050)
MPC - maximum_monkey (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=233720)
OCAU - Monkey_b o l l o c k s (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=339720)
[H] - [H]ardApe (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=341715)

8. Have fun, keep it positive, and enjoy the contest.

Track the race here. (http://clintdavis.us/chimpchallenge2008/)

We need input on the following:
1. There has been talk of inviting the [H] and OCAU to the race.
2. Target points: several numbers have been thrown out there, ranging from 1 million to 10 million. Where does everyone stand on this?
3. Same team name as last year, or do we want to pick a new one?
4. Sweetening the pot by making the loser fold x number of days with a quad smp for the winning team. I like it.
5. Any other concerns.

1. The more the merrier. Sounds like an idea to invite the others. Both are really competitive teams so it should make life interesting.

2. 5 million seems like a good number to account for points inflation as well as lengthening the contest somewhat.

3. What about OCMonkeys08, MPCMonkeys08, OCAUMonkeys08 and HardMonkeys08? Something systematic?

4. A prize other than pride? Sounds like a good idea in principle. What about the loosing teams all have to put in say 30,000 points into the winning team over the course of a month? 10,000 each in an allocated username.

=ACID RAIN=

1.) Go for it.
2.) 1 million would be prefect.
3.) I'm the new guy so I don't have much of an opinion. We could be tutu-wearing marmosets for all I care LOL
4.) I agree. Lose gracefully!
5.) I think the loser should wear something similar to my avatar LOL

Avatar in question (since I changed for comedic affect) :

I think we need a goal higher then 1 million. Some teams are averaging around million PPD, the baked thinks 5 million sounds good.

But not ALL the team gets in the Chimp Challenge. TOO LENGTHY of a Contest will deter some/most. I think I nice Sprint to 2million is good.

Also the I THINK the Losing team folds for 100k points for the Winning team as a prize. Teams need to get volunteers to "pay up" in there own teams. If not the captain has to take the slack.

I Like the idea a lot too.

How about the non-winning (hate to use the word loser) team or teams fold for the winning team the difference of the challenge result. Suppose the difference is 50K (or whatever the figure that may be) for one team at the end of the challenge, they fold that much for the winning team. Lol, I think I just confused myself. Well, for something simpler, then maybe just one SMP WU a day for a month.

2. 5 million seems like a good number to account for points inflation as well as lengthening the contest somewhat.

I agree. I like 5 million too. I think most of MPC seem to like that one as well. Less than two million would make it too short IMO, and 10 million would be too long. I know each year both of our teams surpass our expectations for output so it would be best to err on the side of more points.

3. What about OCMonkeys08, MPCMonkeys08, OCAUMonkeys08 and HardMonkeys08? Something systematic?

Sounds good in theory but each team is responsible for the nick they want to use. MPC will likely retain "maximum_monkey" from last year. It has a certain ring to it.

4. A prize other than pride? Sounds like a good idea in principle. What about the loosing teams all have to put in say 30,000 points into the winning team over the course of a month? 10,000 each in an allocated username.

Pride was decided on two years ago. Each year this discussion comes up and it was decided that to avoid hard feelings with points payback that this formula (jaded monkey/monkey paw) would be kept. If the points weren't paid back as promised it would definitely put future contests in jeopardy and trash the credibility of the contest. I'd hate to see that happen, we manage to stir up enough drama with the smack talk.

Sno, thanks for helping get this kicked off. You're doing a fantastic job over on this side. In keeping with tradition, the kickoff will be on cinco de mayo, 12pm pacific time. I'll take screenshots from the stanford site and post them in an official place so we can base our starting points from that.

On that note, anyone have contact with seadave for the stats? If not, is someone talented with php and stats and willing to handle duties this year? I'm certainly not in that talented category. I'll be busy talking smack anyway.

Thanks!

I think I like 10 Million points. Each team seems to be producing about 1 million PPD so about 10 days at current rate and most likely quicker with the general increase in users (such as from our SETI team), so it would be more like a week. I don't think that is very long at all. And it might give me a chance to fire back up my Athlon XP and get a WU or two out lol.

I'm no PHP whizz but if you were stuck I could do some stats daily by manually checking EOC. Naturally something automated would be preferable.

It doesn't necessarily stipulate that you use the avatars to display either. It could be in a prominent area other than avatars, such as a dedicated thread or in signatures, etc. We can work that out, it's no biggie :)

HAHAHAAH! RUH ROH!

Yeah let me tell you 3.6 is a really good spot for the quad when it comes to folding. It flies through the WUs. Obviously 4GHz would be better, but on this generation 3.6 is crazy fast.

Think of that monkey as a gaudy ornament of hope. The glory it stands for is unsurpassable. Once you understand the glory and wisdom the monkey holds, it becomes beautiful. It could be a bright blue and pink baboon's ass, but to you it is a monument of championship; a statue representing right of passage from mediocre to extreme, from boy to man, from girl to woman, from deaf and blind to omnipotent being.

Any reasons why? A points milestone has been the choice the past couple times and seems to have worked well. We could always limit it to two weeks but then we'd have to choose a milestone within reach. I can't remember how long previous competitions have lasted.

Mitsimonsta

It would just give us a certain length of time to run, that's all.

The points have worked out well for us in the past. I hate to tinker too much with a working system. The past competitions have been all out sprints and have been over faster than we anticipated. That's why I'm liking 5 mil for this year. It's also easy for stats tracking. Seadave (from OC) has done the stats the past two years and also has his system nailed down.

There has been talk on other forums about starting the username CHANGE OVER the day before Cinco de Mayo, timing it so the first WUs turn in around the start time!

What say Team 32 about this?

I will probably change my Username on the morning of the 5th, when I get into work.

When you change usernames is really of no consequence as we take a zero point reading at the start of the race. The only thing early change over does is show the other team the production numbers.

No matter what the rate of production is before the race the points start at zero as of 5/5/08 at 12pm PST.

Have no fear, all of you that finish too soon, you know who you are, can still participate; may want to send the wife out for some ED meds though...

I agree, we should stay with the T32monkeys username. Since we're going to have a multi-million point goal for the contest using an existing name will help keep the first page freed up for individual member stats, instead of having another username on the first page that will likely fall to 0 PPD once summer rolls around. :)

KingFish is off riding his ATV for a few days. When he sobers up I have to get him back up to speed, which could take a while, he is from Lousyana and you know what that means...

In any case I told him I would hold down the fort as far as questions regarding the contest are concerned. Yes, we will be keeping the same username as last year.

Two older models, the Q6700 with a 2.66GHz clock speed and 8MB cache and a 1066MHz FSB speed will drop from the current $527 to $268. The ultra popular 65nm Kentsfield Q6600 with its 2.4GHz clock and 8MB cache will drop from $250 to $227.

So I don't see how I can go wrong with $189 to the door... they're dropping $23. And if Newegg drops their prices by that amount they will still be $220. So I either just saved $30 or spent more than I needed to 5 days early. Oh well, it's done now. :D

It's going to be on my main ( only, besides a 486 DX2 66mhz 100mb's RAM ) system and it's going to maybe change just a little depending on how my re-build goes and what optimizations are in order. I'm just waiting for my Freezone to show up soon. I've done a little folding but not much.

If someone wants to guide me through this, you can just PM me and we'll get started from there. I'm just on a VAIO right now, i'm having some speed withdraw ( no not drugs silly. ) I would really like to participate in this and help "do my part" for this forum.

-GPU folding? Is there a client for an 8600GT?

- Just set team number as 32 when you start the client and run the config. If you need to rerun the config options, just start folding with the -configonly flag and it will re-prompt you for all the info.

-I'd run SMP, it should make the deadlines. If you find that it is missing deadlines on the SMP work units, then consider switching over to two single core clients. I doubt you'll have that problem, though.

-Not to my knowledge - I think the only clients are for ATI cards, and the PPD they produce isn't worth the heat/power requirements.

Sadly, the only GPU's that I know of that Stanford has been able to make clients for are ATI. I am not sure if they even have plans to support Nvidia. Really too bad, I love Nvidia.

1) As far as I know, we will all be folding under T32monkeys.
2) I use the 5.04 client with -advmethods and big units on my P4. Depending on speed and cache, they may not make SMP deadlines, although I think ChasR has a few folding SMP, but I believe they are dedicated rigs.

Right you pathetic whining babies..... LOOK OUT!!

The Team OCAU Dropbears are in... folding under 'Monkey_B o l l o c k s' Muhahahah and it trips your swear filter. What a joke!!

You will see from our team output in the last couple of days that the sleeping giant has awoken and is hungry for a meal of Jade.

We actually have got a sniff of half a chance and that is all we need to bite down on that meaty morsel like a rabid dog. People from our masses are going to start folding - just for this challenge in order to restore the good name of OCAU - and p_i_s_s you guys right off.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Can you have someone go ahead and fold a WU under that username so it can get an EOC stats link?

Are you familiar with the folding client at all? If so you just use the username T32monkeys and team number is 32. If not, for duals and quads use the SMP client. They make it for linux and windows, but the linux one is more points per day. But you can run linux in VMWare under windows (I posted the link to that in the benching lounge) but if you don't feel like going through all that the windows client will work just fine. You'll need .net (2.0 I believe) to run the windows version. For single core there is a standard folding client as well at stanford's download page. You can also fold on ATI GPU's :)

Folding client downloads are at http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download

Brolloks, if you can tell us what the system(s) cpu and memory are, and how much they're on each day, on average, we can give some excellent advice and detailed instructions for whatever type you choose.

The download page sno linked to, above, also has download instructions, right next to each type of FAH client.

In a nutshell, the SMP client works FANTASTIC on strong dual core or quad core systems that are left running 15 hours a day or so. Ten times the pointage of the regular uni-processor FAH program client. Points in the 1,000 to 3,700 per day, are common.

The GPU client is a new version, and I am unsure how well it works. Last version was rather unreliable, unfortunately. Also, it's obvious many graphics cards were not up to the task of folding for hours on end - they died quite prematurely. I can't yet recommend this client.

The uni-processor FAH program (5.04) Console, is rock solid, but limiting on pointage. One I'm folding right now will bring me 1600 points per day. Normally, this same rig gets me 1750 points per day, folding with the SMP client. Other WU's have lowered that PointsPerDay( ppd ), to as low as 350, with this 5.04 uni-processor client.

A lot of the points depends on the type of WU that Stanford is giving out, at that time.

As far as Stanford is concerned, they need SMP WU's done by the barrel full, so they can study the accuracy and efficiency of this new folding client, when compared to other folding clients they use.

It's not all about the points, although we sound like that as Cinco de Mayo looms ever closer. :D

Which SMP client should I be using ?

I want to do some test folding now, so I can work out the bugs.
For the competition I'll run the above chip @ 4Ghz 24/7

For the competition I'll run the above chip @ 4Ghz 24/7

It is a little confusing, with all the new folding clients. The way it looks to me is:

1) 5.91 is the oldest SMP client, and if you stick to a console install, I believe it's the best.

2) 5.92 does NOT support 64 bit Windows, so it's out for you.

3) The 6.XX versions may or may not support Vista 64 bit, but the download page, and the linked forum posts, do not say it does.

And 64 bit Vista is easily the most difficult OS to get a good install and working FAH SMP client for.

So the winner is: 5.91 beta!

From:
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

I don't have a rig with Vista on it, so I'm just going by what I've read. If anyone has personal experience with this, jump in here for Deanzo, please.

You can enter at any time. Before the competition starts, change your folding username in the client.cfg to T32monkey and set your team number to 32 and you'll be all set. All workunits that credit to T32monkeys and team 32 during the competition timeframe will be included in our race stats.

If you're already using a different folding username, you can easily change it by executing the command to start your specific folding client but also add the -configonly switch and it will go through the list of setup/configuration questions again.

There has been talk about folding a wu to 99%, stopping it and finishing/ sending when the toll strikes the beginning of our victory :) (read from other forums competing). Is this legal for the competition?
I don't think it can be checked and it is counterintuitive to the cause, so it is bad form.

I agree, I think it is bad form. But hey, they may need it to get an edge over our vastly superior speeds :)

However, if they want to be fair (this is for fun after all) then maybe instead of cheating they could simply change their names at the starting gate like everyone else ;)
