I'm trying to help my roommate OC his HP... so far no luck with FSB settings in bios or getting them through a bios update... I've got CPUFSB and SOFTFSB, but I don't know what I need to know about his mobo to use them...
He's got a Vanta PCI video card, will coolbits or rivatuner work to OC it?

Download a program called cpucool. In the documentation, it says how to find your PLL.

I used NvMax to run my TNT-2 to 148 GPU, and the memory at 169 mhz. I tried running both higher, but these are as high as I could go with stability. I made a noticeable difference in performance. This is with no physical mods. I'll save big fans and memory heatsinks for a better videod card. $$$

coolbits is working fine for my friend's vanta...
But I changed to detonator drivers and I don't think they're installed right- 23.11 and then 21.83, and 3dmark2k1 won't work at the default resolution/color depth. I have to turn it down to 16bit, where b4 it would work in 32 bit and score around 531. It gives me a texture directx error and says it could not initialize the display adapter, or it says 3dmark could not continue because it lost focus.
My friend's comp uses Win Me, and when I try to pick out a new driver from the list, it won't install it because it's not signed/safely tested by M$ to work in Win Me... I know it's the right driver. I didn't use a download manager or anti-virus software. How do I get around this security issue and install the driver.
The card gets 1206-1250 in the 16 bit test.

Got my roommate involved in OC'ing his Vanta using NVmax.. raised memory to around 164 and GPU to 110 from 100/125. This made a noticable difference in Counterstrike and 3dmark. Now he can play games at a higher resolution too. But we still can't get his Vanta to run 3dmark at its default test. I don't get it... I was able to do it last week before I put in the new detonators.
Any ideas?

I have no experience with Winme, so I can't offer any advice there. But I can tell you that the 23.11 drivers did not work with my TnT-2. I had to go back to the 21.83 drivers. The 23.11 drivers really degraded the performance of my card. Also, what version of Direct X are you using?

I upgraded his directx to 8.1, maybe I should try to find some updates or patches for win me too.
Guess I'll try older drivers. I kinda wish I still had the original ones. I'm sure they're there, but I don't know where or what they're called. Can't find 'em in add/remove programs like I can on my Win2k rig.
Not bad at 110/167 for such a crappy card. I told him he'd do oh so much better to spend $100 on an ATI 7500. Or to get some cheap cooling solutions. Not to mention better ram, more ram, new mobo, new HSF, case mods, etc.
