Apparently some error code, 80015014, is popping up on the PS3 that tanks it.
Sony is denying/mystified at this happening. Theory is that it is a hard drive issue...... hoping this doesn't turn into a RROD or SOny optical drive type of issue. FURTHER hoping this doesn't happen to MY PS3.

A little off topic:
Thank you for posting a few alternatives to kotaku. Recently it's become a soft core porn site. Gawker media has lowered themselves to paying its editors by page hits, thankfully jalopnik.com has resisted the smut trend (to a degree).

I started reading some more and........
Oh CRAP, no not again..... NOT AGAIN... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO O
http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/006781.html
I had the 80010514 problem (Bluray drive dead 85% of the cases).
Like me, some more dozens of PS3 howners had that problem (In Portugal alone), now the funny part... We HAVE TO WAIT 7 to 10 WEEKS for a repaired PS3! PR from Playstation Portugal refuses to give me an anser about why this happens here in Portugal and in UK they take less than a week for a repair!
Sony is using a company (Stockuno) to take care of repairs, well, they SUCK!
I swear if this is my 7th Sony console to go belly up due to an optical drive issue, SONY WILL PAY DEARLY!

Apparently after word of this started spreading, Sony shut down the Playstation forums and removed all threads related to 80015014..... this is NOT GOOD

As of right now the Europe site is still shut down

Wow.. that is so not good for Sony.
This will be an interesting thing to monitor development on. It's always difficult to guage how widespread such problems are. At least seeing how Sony handles it isn't difficult at all.

Whoa, this is all happening in one day? lol. Good luck to you guys, us 360 owners are veterans already :)
Wow I remember the trouble we had with our first ps2. Sometimes it would just decide not to read the disk at all while other times it worked fine. I hope they can resolve this.

Yeah, my old high school buddy had the same kind of problems with his. He was on board with a pre-paid first-day launch unit. He reserved one in town, and by the time it actually come out he had since moved to Nebraska. He made a special "vacation" so that he could come down and be in line on launch day morning at the store he reserved it.
He bought a whole new unit about 4 months later because of optical disk problems...and had at least two more that I know of go bad after that one.
I personally had two PS1's go bad over time - all optical drive problems. Never did get a PS2 of my own.

Uh oh! Two exclamation points! It's time for another Fudge PARANOIA THREAD!
So far there have only been a handful of these cases reported and it's almost always due to a hard drive error. I know this because my friend's PS3 went south due to a bad install of Devil May Cry 4. Basically the hard drive that came with the system was probably corrupt from the get-go and it interfered with the firmware causing his Bluray drive to not operate. I would imagine this will be fixed, at some point, by a firmware update that prevents this from happening and checks drives for bad sectors.
But this issue is nowhere NEAR as prevalent as the RROD... so it's not even sane to make that comparison. This is more like one of those first firmware updates for the Wii that was crashing systems. About as many people get this error as Wii owners that had their system go down to bad firmware.

read some sony threads regarding this..now a guy has his 3rd console doing this, and all every fanboy in that topic is saying is : suck it up, don't complain, it's a piece of electronic and it can fail..
now I just look to my right side..what's that? aah yes, it's a NES, its warranty expired last year, that's 22 years (!) of warranty, and it's still going strong
when I spend a lot of money on a piece of electronical equipment I want it to NOT FAIL..this is just ridiculous, the waiting time of 3 weeks is outrageous to say the least

Chances are the dude that says he had THREE PS3s die on him is simply lying. Nobody else that I've seen has had a PS3 die on them. Nobody HERE has had a PS3 die on them. And this error usually comes up in the first month or so of use.
The real problem is internet nutjobs running around creating a MAJOR CATASTROPHE out of a rare error that most people hadn't even heard of until yesterday.

That makes no sense at all. 2 different game consoles by a single manufacturer with the same issue (optical drives failing) 3 times each is not even remotely equivalent to a toaster, nuke and car those are 3 different products and manufacturers, well unless you drive a Daewoo.
It'd be like an Atari 2600, 5200 and 7800 all having a cartridge slot that broke after 6 months. That would be similar. I think your analogies need work.

The same airheads that defended the PS3 vs the 360, are also going to be the strongest voices of opposition when talking about the severity of the error.
Microsoft managed to keep the fire under control with their problems, It wouldn't be unreasonable to think SONY couldn't do the same. The most interesting part would be how they would tackle this problem, if indeed its true.

This does not prevent me from saying anything about it.
The scale between these two is MASSIVE.
I hate to admit it but this is true, the recall rate of 360's due to hardware failures including the RROD is pretty high:
a 16.4% failure rate for the Microsoft Xbox 360 (http://squaretradebuyerblog.typepad.com/squaretrade/2008/02/xbox-fail-rates.html)... a sample group of 1040 Xbox 360 warranties purchased between April 1 and July 31, 2007... Out of the 171 claims, 102 were "Red Ring of Death" (RROD) general hardware failures. This represents roughly 60% of all claims, and 9.8% of all warranties in the sample group. It's believed that overheating is the main cause.
Of the other 69 claims;
• 18% were disc read errors.
• 13% were video card failures.
• 13% were hard drive freezes.
• 10% were power issues.
• 7% were disc tray malfunctions.
Notice that a lot of these faults are not covered by Microsoft's warranty, so this is a better reflection of the failure rates. Also worth noting is that at the moment Microsoft refuses to release white papers on the issue.
PS3's do brick, but not on this scale.

Ok, lets be serious.... how many people here plus the people you know of has this problem? I'm getting a little paranoid about this.... because i want to get my 2nd PS3. Will really suck if both went down with the this problem.
None of the people who I know that owns a PS3 has any problem at all.
I had never heard anything about this until this morning. The only problems that I thought I may have had w/ the PS3 was a slow wireless downloads + heat. Both of them checked out to being "normal."

So, people have reported an error, and in response, Sony shuts down the forums and deletes any reference to the error.
Surely that means its a serious problem Sony has no idea whats causing it, how prevalent its going to be or how to fix it?
I find it especialy funny that someone brought up that microsoft refuses to release failure rates or be open, in order to defend Sony doing the same.

It is VERY real. It's just being covered up by Sony. It is not as widespread as the 360 RROD but the PS1 and PS2 optical drive issues were quite widespread however they were never met with the furor or media that the 360 RROD was.

Thats because the RROD effects gamers since it was within the first couple years of launch. Which as we know gamers use the internet a lot more other people do, so it just seemed like the media cared more.
To sum things up, the error is not hardware releated. Unfortunately, it is occuring through the corruption of firmware. Restoring you PS3 will not roll back the firmware, and unfortunately will not fix the issue 9 times out of 10. If you are receiving this error, contact Sony for a replacement unit. They are very fast when it comes to servicing/replacing as we had our 60Gb (the one that is in shortage ya know) back in about 2 1/2 weeks. I walked into GameCrazy today to pick up some GelTabz, and some guy walked in with his 60 Gigger. They set it up on the display there, put in a copy of COD4, and they received error code 80010514. The kid had lost his receipt for the extended warranty, so he was gonna get Sony on the horn.
