Help me with project

Hi guys, I really need help with a project I'm making, I don't know how does a Capacitor/Diode thing on the picture is called.

what is this circuit used for? there are many diode/capacitor configuration that are used on various application... one would be a power supply ( rectifier ) where the capacitor acts as a filter... but this capacitor is polarized... the one on the diagram is non-polarized, like a ceramic or mylar capacitor....

I'm getting a + sin wave like ^^^^ and I have to make it to about a digital wave like that |~~~|
But all I need to know is how this configuration is called so I could do a search on it, I have to get info about this to write a paper.

It would be much easier if you post the whole circuit diagram not just part of it... What application does your project is for?
