View Full Version : Celeron 850, 900, 950 on 8 x 100 Abit Mobo?
My Abit BX6 (not version 2.0 I believe) only supports a muliplier of 8 x FSB and I am trying to slap a cheap celeron in it. My problem is that I am having trouble finding anyone (in Canada) selling a Celeron 800. Most places have 850, 900 or 950's as there minimun in stock Celeron cpu. I am afraid to buy one and have it not work.
My voltage range is 1.3 to 2.3.
Will these chips run in my system if I set the bios to 8 x 100? Do they have locked multipliers that will just make them run at 8.5, 9.0 or 9.5 x 100 anyway? Or will the bios not matching the CPU mutliplier cause me problems?
Thanks!

You can probably get higher speeds to work too if you update your bios .. check on the abit website (www.abit.com.tw) if there is a bios upgrade for your mobo.
If you don't mind take the panel which your motherboard is supported on and on the side covered by the base of the case read on the ISA slot it should say the Rev.
And with the lastest bios upgrade it will support multipliers up to 12 I do believe.
Since on the website it says ..
"Supports Intel PentiumŪ III/Celeron 450~700MHz processor cartridge"
The Celeron 700 has a multiplier of 10.5...
By the way I think you can determine if you have rev 2.0 by using Sisoft Sandra and finding the mainboard information.

Yes, it will work. My sister has a BX6 rev1 (used to be mine). I recently put a C900 in it. It is slightly funky. Even with the latest BIOS, it reports a PII 952 or something like that on boot, but it works fine. You also have to "set" the voltage to 1.75 in the BIOS. It will be 2.0 if you do not. The system has been running fine for ~ 3 months now.

What slotket did you use though

MSI 6905 Master rev 2.3
I just found someone that has a C850 in stock and and can possibly get me a C800 this week. What he said was that because my board is based on 'Katmai' CPUs and that all these Celeron's are 'Coppermine', that the board would not recognize it properly. He said it would probably work... but with some funny/weird issues.
Any comments on that? From what I have seen a lot of people posing here are running Coppermine cpu's in older boards designed for Katmai. Am I wrong?

The C900 works perfectly in the one I set up. The only odd things were what I posted earlier. Nothing at all to be concerned with. It works 100% stable.
Oh one more thing... Do different Sloket's make a big difference on stuff like this? Is there a particular jumper/setting/feature that I need to watch for? The only sloket I've looked at close up had a jumper labelled "Coppermine blah blah".
Thanks for all the info everyone... one more question. What should I set my Bios too?
I am putting a C850 in my mobo tonight. Voltage settings are not a problem on my abit but as mentioned before I can do only 8 x 100. I know the hardwired CPU multiplier of 8.5 is going to be used... but does it matter what I set my Bios too.
Two options as I see it.
1) User defined cpu: 8 x 100
2) Take the highest 'standard' setting: something like 5.5 x 100.
Does it make ANY difference? Thanks again.
