what exactly does that switch on the back of the power supply do? i think it specifies how much power to put through to the mainboard, but all the boards i have seen are 115v. is that what that is?

Very simple! In the US you use 110-115 V AC in Europe We use 220-240 V AC.

I believe that is for the voltage conversion. You would change that if you were in a different country where they have different outputs from the wall outlets.

it uses a transformer, whose physics <i>I</i> dont want to get hardcore into, but they are actually really cool and if you like physics which you might cause you are on these forums:eh?: you can read about them with a quick google search.
