Which card? BFG 9600GT 512mb vs EVGA 8800GTS 640

I have both cards. Which should I put in my gaming rig? Play mostly BF2, COD4, CSS, etc...

Its the 8800GTS 640 not the 512. Does that make a difference in your opinion?

The 640 plays really well, and the 9600gt also plays well. If you slightly OC the 9600 i think you'll find its performance in intensive games a bit better than the 640.

get a 8800gts 512mb they are just as good as a 9800gx2

the 8800 will play any game on max settings and you wouldnt notice any difference from that to the 9800

Glad to hear it. The 8800GTS 512 will go into the gaming rig. Glad because the card wont fit in the workstation box. (Oops) ! Here's hoping I dont see a performance drop from the 98600GT I just took out!

9600Gt or 8800GT or 8800GTS is where it is at pending on your budget

Anyways - the 8800GTS says its running at 57c whereas my 9600GT says its running at 34c. Both benchmarked about the same...

Uhm, what? That's just plain wrong. Possibly somewhat true if you are playing at 640x480 or something, but otherwise, a complete fabrication.

The facts are I just benchmarked both cards in the same machine. They are literally neck and neck on 3dMark06. The difference is the 9600GT is running at 39c and the 8800GTS is running at 58c.

Finding a direct comparison of a 640MB 8800GTS and a 9600GT isn't easy. There's one site that lists a ton of cards at multiple resolutions for numerous games but I can't find it. I know what the charts look like though. Considering that the 9600GT is very close to the 8800GT in many cases aside from a few stressful shader-heavy games and the 8800GT should outperform a 640 8800GTS I'd go with the 9600GT. It should do fine in the games you listed. What resolution are you running? The only advantage of the 640 is a bit more memory although it isn't a ton, it would definitely do better if the 9600GT ran out of memory.

Just remember you can't go by simple benches like 3DM, it doesn't always correlate to in-game performance differences.

Ahh, thanks for the tip on the BM comparisons. I have been using the 9600GT for about 2 weeks now and I really like it. We ordered the 8800GTS for the work computer but it didnt fit in the case. I thought maybe I could just put the 8800 in my gaming rig and put the 9600 in the work computer but I dont want to sacrifice "better" gear from my personal stash. I would have traded if the 8800 was better but personally I like the fact that my 9600 runs cooler.

The 8800GTS seams to be smoother @ 1680X1050.. But they seam to be the same at lower resolutions. That 8800GTS gets SOOOO hot. Its even hot to the touch!

I already own one so you're right. It would'nt make sense tho if they're buying a new card :)
