View Full Version : memory
I need to add memory to my system to compensate for XP. I have 256 megs of pc2100 on an asus a7m266. I want to add between 256-512 megs of extra ram but am unsure of a couple of things. First, does it matter what brand I get? I know crucial is the best but it's on avg sixty dollars more than everything else, and I'm not sure what brand I have now, probably generic. Second, what is ECC and non-ECC? I don't know if my current RAM is ecc or non-ecc and I also don't know whether to buy my upgrade as ECC or non-ECC. Is it possible to mix the two in one system? I assume ECC is more desirable because it's more expensive but is it worth the price difference? I have a small FSB oc on my axia y 1.33 to 1.36.
If you go to crucial.com you'll find detailed explainations of various types of ram.
ECC is Error correcting code and is tyically used in servers not home computers.
Check your manual to see what type of ram they advise you to use.
Crucial helps by having a motherboard model selection pull down menu so you can choose your mobo and the right ram for it.
Can you mix generic ram together? Most of the time yes.
can you mix ecc and non ecc ram together? I don't think so.
