View Full Version : Redundant PSU's - Is a DIY solution possible?
Is it possible to (easily) create a redundant PSU setup from normal ATX PSU's?
I have not done research on this, as I am sure it is possible, but I would like to know user experiences on this.

Quick search yielded this post (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=88976). They're older but should still apply.
Unfortunately I am talking about something different. That link you posted deals with running two PSU's simultaneously to power a large system.
What I am talking about is running one PSU at a time, and should it die, another would take over automatically without loss of power or damage to the system. Exactly like a hot spare drive in RAID 5 E... Servers typically use this.
Thanks for the reply though!

Possible, but you have to design a sense circuit that fires a PS_ON to the second unit just as the first unit's rails begin to fail. This has to be done very quickly. However, most redundant units I know of always have the second unit on.

I used to have a diagram of a simple circuit that allowed you to run two PSUs in unison. It used a mosfet and a diode, and some other parts, to keep the PSUs from trying to regulate one another. I lost it when I lost most of my data a couple months back.
