whats the general time set on a SMP? i dont know if thats the right way to ask the question but most of the time they have a set amount of time that they give u to fold something right? so how do u know what it is? is there a general time set?

That lists the time limits :)

help me understand this a little more, the shortest i saw was .90 days with final deadline being 2.60.
so they want u to fold this in .90 days but will let u run it as long as 2.60 days? is this right? im asking because im running the SMP on my e2180 at 3.0Ghz and it should take bout 25 hours to make a full loop i think and i want to make sure and make the dead line.

"Prefered& FInal"....
It's what they would like them in & anything after the Final - you get squat for points.
Then they have to reissue it back out for someone else to do. -again.

hank , with either rig in sig , you should be ok with whatever Stanford throws you
The 30xx WUs with their very tight deadlines, are generally sent only to quads. The exception being when the DC server is down. Then the fail back is to send out the 30xx WUs to dual cores. You may well have an issue making the prefered deadline on some of those. My Nocona duallie will not make the prefered deadline on those and a P4 640@ 3.86 GHz won't make the final deadline. If you can't make the prefered deadline, the WU is reissued, so it is important to make that deadline to avoid duplication of the work.

If you can't make the final deadline, would it be better to to delete the work unit and just have the client get a new one, or would you likely just get a similar one?

Well I have my first quad on order. I realize from some statements that 2 vm's is the way to go point wise but would it be better to just run one smp and maybe 1 uni client? This rig will only have 2gig mem starting off also. I have read the stickies but I believe I am missing or misunderstanding something guys.
Thanks and sorry if this is off topic.

thanks. I was kink of worried bout the e2180 but i have it folding at 3.2Ghz. it seems to pump it out just fine! its not as fast as the quad core but it still is fast!

Hopefully the E2180 isn't too terrible, it's the best I've got for now, just that and my Athlon XP2400 both are currently stock speed too.

na dude e2180 pretty much owns. there very easy to OC too. i see 3.0Ghz for you with out much problem. i think it take me 25 hours to fold something thats 5000000 steps. pushing the heat factor on e2180 running it at 3.2Ghz. at 3.0Ghz it runs nice and cool. anything over that it take a little more voltage and the heat goes up.

hah now that you say it takes you 25 hours to do a 5000000 step one I just got one of those. For the O.C. I bought a prebuilt system (Systemax N2000 @tigerdirect) and they've got the 2180 in what I gather is a crappy 680i SLI board. With that how high do you think I could run it on air? I'm probably going to get an E8400 with my "stimulus" check from uncle sam and a decent board to go with it but that'll be a while yet.

on stock air or some good air? u might be able to get 3.0Ghz on stock cooling depending. and the 680I is not a bad mobo. i have one. it clocked a few chips pretty good. just not my quad core. the best thing is u can UN-link the ram speed to the CPU speed so u can get the max OC of both.
as for the pre build system thats not bad. are u sure its not a E2160. do some reading on the intel sec post questions if theres something u dont understand and have fun!

That's wierd, it says 2160 at 1.80GHZ on the site but on my system information it says 2180@ 2.00GHz

Congrats on the new order!
Two SMP instances via vm's may be best for points, but unless this is a dedicated folder, overall usability is critical.
If you're running 1 SMP client, "bare", without a vm, then I'd say forget the uni-processor folding client.
That will leave you with the most available left over memory, and still allow you to fold very strongly.
The beauty of it is that you can experiment with your new set-up, and see what fits you, best, and the dual core version of vm ware, is free!
Free is sooo hard to beat. Have fun! :)
