I've been looking at newer video cards and I'm wondering why they (in most cases) are all back down to 256bit for memory interface even on the newer highend cards 9800's?

My current card is:

EVGA 640-P2-N825-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

So I've got 320bit, and some of the other 8800's have 384bit, yet all the new stuff is back to 256bit (or 512 but is just 256bit with 2 gpu's).

So why is this? Isn't that a step back, and short changing people on high end cards when they could just go for 320, 384, 512 etc?

So how much does this affect the performance of a card?

Also as far as looking for a replacement for my current card most all the cards are 512MB memory or 1GB (which I'd love to get but the cards are so much more money), I like how the 8800's offered a 320, 640 & 768 flavors. I guess it's possible they will eventually introduce them for the 9800 series?
