View Full Version : WC noob...sound from pump
I finished my first wc setup on sunday, everything was running fine. Today I can hear the pump sounds like its going off and on every 15 seconds or so, and the liquid in the res jumps a little when it does this. What could be going wrong here ? Is it a defective pump or is it something in my loop causing this ? My pump is Laing D5 http://www.dangerden.com/store/product.php?productid=274&cat=23&page=1
and my loop goes: pump > rad > temp monitor > cpu block > res
corruption

You might have some air working it's way through your loop......what does it sound like?

You can hear the pump stop, then a whilrling up noise as it starts again.

Check the connection. I wonder if something is wrong with the way they"fixed it at #5" for max performance.
could easily be a connection. my D4 had a horrible molex con so i replaced it.
It sounds like a power problem to me.

agreed. water jumping in the res sounds like the pump just keeps turning on and off. the molex on those pumps do suck, so verify good contact.
or, pump needs to be repaired/replaced.
Thanks all for your suggestions, I am going to send in to get pump exchanged. Is this a good pump ? do you recommend something different ?

Those are great pumps. Stay with it.
Hey, I have a new pump now Swiftech MCP655-B , I just haven't had the chance to post back in a while. But I replaced the pump and I am still having the same problem with a new pump. What else could be causing this? During bleeding it ran fine, I'm sure i have all the bubbles out I don't see any and I've moved the case around every which way. This time it is worse though, the tubing is jumping and the liquid in the res is jumping. The pump just keeps stopping every 2 minutes or so then starts pumping again after about 5 seconds. My parts are:
Swiftech MCP655-B Pump - mounted on bottom of case
DTek-Fusion CPU Block
Swiftech MCR-220-QP Rad - mounted on bottom of case
Swiftech MCRES-Micro Hi-Flo Reservoir
FluidXP + Ultra - Blood Red
Loop goes Pump > Rad > CPU Block > Res

Do you have a DMM (digital multimeter?) If so, check the voltage across the pump, current, ect, and make sure it's all up to specs.
Also, list your other system pieces. (most importantly, PSU.)

Nah, I don't have a multimeter. Other parts listed in sig.
Even though the PSU should be enough, because you said during bleeding it ran fine, I'm still running with the suspicion something is wrong with it. If you are able to do this, strip your system down to the barebones of running, minimal ram, one graphics card, no ocing (if you did any) and see if it runs. An alternative would be, if you have any other computers with similar psu's and many less components, try sticking it on one of them.
my guess would too be the psu
if you know anybody who has one ask if you can borrow it for a couple of days
or asuming your in us or canada i guess you could get a cheap one for like $20 or so
i think i payed something around $20 at canadian tire when i lived in canada
Anyone know if kingwin is a good OEM? I haven't really had any experience with them, but 650 watt seems a little skimpy. Then again, my 850 will handle an overclocked system with a much larger waterloop, so I can't really speak on it.

For all your PSU questions....

Hmm. The mach one series seems like a solid line, I'd say borrow a PSU from someone or get another pSU and try out your entire system on it. It's possibly just faulty, and RMAable.
Someone with more time than me know enough about those parts to pull a wattage calculation at idle?

I really don't think it's a PSU problem. Pumps pull a smalllll amount of power at all. It would show other problems at the CPU/GPU side since it's on the 12v rail. I'd double check the molex pins, use a diff molex connector to the pump etc before RMA'ing.
Have you opened up the pump to check for something holding the impeller up? I found 2 peices of packing foam in my D5 vario when I took it apart (same with all my blocks before installing my system). Is the motor end of the pump really warm? If it's the vario does it do it at a setting of 3 or so?
Just some questions and things to check..... If all of this fails send it in, could be a bad one. And Email Jeremy at DD, he might know what to check too.
I can't think it's something like that merely that he rma'd the pump and the same problem is reaccuring. I figured you replaced the molex with the new pump, but if you didn't do that, I'm still leaning on a PSU problem.

He already RMA'ed it? Ohh didn't know that. Could be the PSU molex end. I don't think it's not enuff power on the 12v rail tho.
Someone had the same problem months ago, I tried to find the thread here and on xtreme forums.
I was told that its possible it is the Fluid XP + Ultra I am using that could be causing the issue with the pump, that the fluid xp needs to be diluted. I don't want to have to do that.
I was just thinking about switching to a diff coolant. I was thinking about Feser One (http://www.dangerden.com/store/product.php?productid=317&cat=63&page=1) . Anyone else use this? is this pretty good ?

Distilled water and a little bit of water wetter. good cheap switch.
And dude a multi meter is like 20 bucks from radio shack. go get one and check your PSU or get someone that has a good PSU to make sure its not your PSU.
Hey, I just added some distilled water to the fluid XP and the issue with the pump is gone now, much better flow rate and temps got better too. Thanks for all the help guys.

Fluid XP needs to put "PLEASE dilute this stuff!!!" in red letters on the label somewhere!
That is actually how you should be using Ultra, it is highly concentrated and in most loops requires dillution with dei water. Let me know your new results.

Hello, I noticed today that the coolant flows much better through my loop when warmer than my average temps. Would it be possible, without a detrimental chemical change, to add deionized water to Fluid XP ultra to decrease its viscosity?
