I remember using a friends HP laptop that had a program where it would show on a little map where the location of possible routers were so he can connect the nearest one.
Is there a downloadable program like this?

Since a laptop can't tell the direction from which a signal is arriving (it would need at least two antennas to do that), your friends program probably just converted signal strength into feet. And anyway, distance doesn't matter, just signal strength.

hmm...it seemed like this program actually showed on a grid where the signal was. this will help in places where there is a public router i can use, but don't know the location of...

He was probably using NetStumbler and had made maps of the area recently.

You can only estimate the location, and you need to map it out... if you have netstumbler and a gps you can get a rough map as you move around it will try to triangulate the points.
