Well today I plugged my Seagate PATA drive into my usb adapter, and the controller smoked. Specifically, it looks like a ST chip, and I think that lead to one 1r00 fuse busting in half, and another half-burnt. Unfortunately...its out of warranty. But I'd really like to get the data off it, which would save me a day or three of work.

My question: Its a Seagate 40gb 7200.7 drive, and I have a Seagate 80gb 7200.7 drive. The controllers look very similar, so do you think I could swap it to rescue the data? I'm guessing the drive is fine inside, that its just the controller.

edit: my other option would be to spend $20-30 for similar model # and try that. But the 80gb is still under warranty...:sn:

I think if you have the same model and the same firmware on both controllers then yes, you can swap them. I don't think you can use the 80 GB board on the 40 GB drive. Maybe check eBay and look for the same model drive you have but dead or just the controller.

You'll want to hunt the exact same drive down on e-Bay to get the right PCB. I did this about a year ago with success.
