Well today I plugged my Seagate PATA drive into my usb adapter, and the controller smoked. Specifically, it looks like a ST chip, and I think that lead to one 1r00 fuse busting in half, and another half-burnt. Unfortunately...its out of warranty. But I'd really like to get the data off it, which would save me a day or three of work.
My question: Its a Seagate 40gb 7200.7 drive, and I have a Seagate 80gb 7200.7 drive. The controllers look very similar, so do you think I could swap it to rescue the data? I'm guessing the drive is fine inside, that its just the controller.
edit: my other option would be to spend $20-30 for similar model # and try that. But the 80gb is still under warranty...:sn:
