Hi everyone:
What I have on my bench today is a Dell inspiron 1150 laptop/notebook. It wasn't working when I recieved it, but I managed to get it to go (new power supply, new keyboard, added memory, replaced CPU cooler, replaced HD w/120G WD, and installed Vista Ultimate).
This laptop was originally going to be shipped up north to my youngest son, for his own personal use since he browses the net with a PSP right now, and that just don't cut it for most of the things he needs to do. It was due to be shipped yesterday, but something happened while the laptop sat:
My Boglen Terrier decided to chew on the cord coming out of the power supply, ruining the cord going to the laptop. :bang head

Brief description of what I've done so far:
Remove chewed wire, strip back the outer layer, exposing the 3 conductors, apply heat-shrink and solder the wires in order (blue, brown, red), encroach on the vast body of knowledge on the net, finding a similar problem, getting the benchmarks for the power supply and pinout on the MOBO, test and confirm.

All the tests on the power supply "seem" to be correct. The output is supposed to be 19.5 from + to -, and there is an identifier terminal which gets one of two voltages, +12.5 and +10.8, which is used by the MOBO to identify which power supply is connected (PA10 or PA12).

Problem is when the power supply is connected, the BIOS says "unknown" when you look at the battery meter in the BIOS.

Center wire reads 12.5, like it should for the 90W power supply, and the output is 19.4, as read from my meter.

If anyone could help with this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. I promised my son a laptop/notebook about a month ago when I went to visit him, and now I am stuck with this problem.

(P.S.: Yes, I do give the dog a dirty look whenever the question of the laptop comes up)

dell psu's give some funky signal to the laptop that if its not perfect will sometimes refuse to work.

Best bet is to just get another power adapter.

That was my thought to begin with, but I figured I'd just toss that out there. I'll have to hit the local shop and see if one of their "spares" works on it.
Sux because I just bought that power supply 2 weeks ago....

My Dell notebook's cable did the same thing. After seeing the price of replacement adapters I opted to get rid of the notebook.
