Heh eh heh... man, it's gonna take a while to get this one figured out. Any help is appreciated. I guess I'll start from the top...
I got Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and it wouldn't install. It stopped at 98% and said corrupt install media, yet I was able to install it on another pc with that same cd just fine. I tried to update Nero to the latest version, and after downloading the patch, it stopped at 52% extracting and gave a strikingly similar error that was pretty close to what RTCW said. I knew something was up, and I figured that it was because when I was installing XP after I got my new mobo that it kept saying "cannot copy [insert file name here]" during the install and missed copying a few files. Here's the ones I couldn't get copied:
shell32.dll, msgina.dll, compstui.dll, dsuiext.dll, luna.mst, mmsys.cpl and mqutil.dll
There were other files that could not be copied, but I was able to get them on by switching between the 3 XP cds I have (burned copies) when it said it couldn't copy the file and trying all 3 to see if one of them would copy it (all 3 cds worked fine on other pcs btw).
I assumed it wouldn't work considering it wouldn't copy shell32.dll, but somehow it continued and finished the install. After it finished the copying files process, it got to the actual graphical install where I kept getting errors and contined to switch cds, which allowed me to finish the install. I figured all my problems were over, but that is when the RTCW/Nero issues started.
I decided to reinstall XP again; no dice.
I recently bought a new hard drive (a 30GB Maxtor 7200RPM), so I didn't think it was the issue, but I took it back and after describing the problem (I thought it was possibly bad sectors because it was always the same files, etc), they let me exchange it for a 30GB Western Digial 7200RPM, and it still did the SAME thing!
I guessed next it must have been my Aopen 12/10/32 CD-RW (1232 PRO) that was the issue, so I went out and bought an Aopen 16X DVD-ROM (DVD1648/AMH) and set it as the primary master (I have an ATA100 connection on my mobo, so my hard drive is plugged into that instead of into the IDE connection) and the issue persists!
I decided to reinstall XP AGAIN. This time, I got a CD from one of my friends that he KNEW worked. It still stopped on all the files listed above, plus a few extras that I was able to get copied by using one of the other 2 cds.
After that, I tried to get all the files copied by plugging my hard drive into the upstairs pc and letting all the files copy. They all did with the cd my friend said would work, but when I brought it downstairs to see if I could get it to work, I got a bluescreen that would not let me get past.
At this point, I decided to get XP back on my machine just so I can get all the BIOS updates/firmware updates for my devices and see if that works, but if it doesn't, my next guess would be the mobo.
The main reason I'm asking for help though is because I want to find out how to get the firmware version for my CD-RW and DVD drives because the Aopen website does not say how to find out in XP. Apperantly, you can't update from V1 => V5, you have to go V1 => V2 => V3 => V4 => V5, so I need to find out what my firmware versions are.
Any advice/helpful comments are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance :)
