View Full Version : How long will socket 775 stay in production when Nehalem comes out?

Two new intel sockets will be out for Nehalem. My question is when will the mainstream production die off for the 775 socket? Or how long do sockets usually last once a new one comes out?
Not too long I would think. Once the new socket boards come out, and have a revision or two, then you will start to see companies reduce their 775 socket boards.
I would estimate, 3 - 6 months after Nehalem is mainstream you will see a falloff of 775 boards. The higher end boards will falloff first. Lower ends ones usually stay around longer.

when will the mainstream production die off Obvious answer: only after we've all purchased expensive aftermarket CPU coolers that only fit Socket 775! But by then, the PIII and AthlonXP users will start upgrading to leftover 775 kit and we'll have a market for our ArcticThermalFreezerOCzRights with SloppiX fans.

Thus is the life of technology :-/ I held on to my 939 for the longest time before I upgraded to 775. I don't see another upgrade anytime soon.

yes, but he asked how long 775 would be around once nehalem was out.
Remember 754? That died super fast once 939 came out..

Socket 775 has been so huge and stable, both with the new and used markets, it will continue to be a viable platform for at least two more years. It's one of the successful platform-sockets in the last 10 years. I have no doubt that even new 775 boards will be easily available a year from now. Socket 478 was still selling at least a year after 775 was introduced. Wouldn't surprise if some vendor, somewhere still has sealed 478 boards available.

Remember 754?Yeah, just one of several bullet holes in AMD's shredded foot. Fortunately, there aren't too many socket blunders like 754. But to reinforce my previous post, Socket 775 and Socket A are two of the most successful specifications ever, IMO.

server socket is what is out first at the EOY. then in the first Q or firsrt H of 09 is when mainstream neha socket comes out. i would expect intel to have a few cpus for LGA775 after the release of mainstream neha socket, not many, maybe like 2-4 new ones.

Yeah 754 was nice, then bam 939 and the 754 became a fossil, lol.
As far as how long in tme frame will the 775 still be out before being phased out is hard to determine exactly.

Yeah those were my thoughts exactly because of the P45 boards, which are supposedly coming out 'soon' as the revision to P35.
I wonder if Intel will make a E9xxx or Q10000's before they are done with the socket 775.
But I would imagine Intel wouldn't make any 32nm stuff for the 775 socket.
I went from a socket 754 AMD to Intel 775 =D

I would imagine that is correct. It doesn't really bother me yet, as 45nm hasn't even matured yet.

socket 478 anyone? with all the cores that have passed by over time nothing still rings in my ears as much as "barton" "norhtwood" "Presscott". :) Applebred? lol

478 and socket A have been solid plateforms. Their motherboards are sill selling used for $100+
On another hand, octo core w/HT is going to be overkill for most people, 775 should be around for 2-3 years in mainstream.

775 chip production will continue through the end of 2009, meaning more delicious goodies for us OC'ers, look for the quad extremes to be down around 300$ by christmas.

i know that a new socket set will be coming soon as in this year soon with a new 65nm chip for severs.
