View Full Version : Dead Ballistix...what should I get?

So it seems to be a fairly common problem these days, but my Ballistix are dead. I'll be RMAing them and putting them in a secondary box as I'm short on DDR2. But, I want some stuff that won't die on me if overclocked a bit.
Any suggestions on a reasonable 2GB kit of DDR2? I'm not looking to spend 150 bucks or anything...just something with reasonable OCing and a better track record than Ballistix.

Mine died twice, don't feel bad ;)
Here are some that caught my eye:
nice price - no rebate

I'd go with the 4GB G skill...used them before and they seem very good for the price.

drop your multi to 8x up your fsb to 400mhz with a 1:1,keep the stock timings. as at cas5 your need ddr2-1000 to match ddr2-800 cas4 bandwidth. otherwise that first set jigga posted i would suggest as well.
another vote for g.skills
hi'
I had recently an rma of a pair of ballistix as many did ;)
got some corsair c5d 8500(1066) this morning with the airflow blowing on them,
nice sticks and DS ;)
and they show the bus at 1066 in bios, full recognition ;)

been impressed with OCZ Reaper HTPC 8500 stuff
had 4x1gb Crucial 8500 before
now have 2x2gb of this new stuff .... I gave up testing but they gave no errors in memtest at 1100 CAS5 .. 2.05V - great - even better than the Ballistix. and they get no-where near as hot !!!
hi'
are you all running 64b OS?
coz, I was considering that 2 gb was a kinda limit for a 32b OS ...?
anyway, glad with corsair ;)

Vista 64 bit here :) and loving it
I was down to 2gb for 2 weeks and it was very noticeable how much extra disk accessing htere was
as for Vista 32 bit - 4gb is fine - you'll just be able to address 3.2 gig though :( - but still better than 2 gig.. word of warning though with my P5B I could only use more than 2 gig of RAM with Vista 64, as to enable the board to use it I had to enable Memory Remap .. which then mapped the 2gb out of range of Vista 32
I reccommended a friend with a Dell to go to 4gig (Vista 32) and he was very scepticle - but at 25 quid delivered he thought he'd give it a whirl - emailed me 30 mins later saying that it had made a noticeable difference :)

I'm running 32bit XP. It shows 3.5GB.

Shame the $90 2x2GB G.Skills went out of stock - sweet price for some DDR2-1000 RAM.
Thanks for the recommendations. Going to order something today - still not sure yet. :p

These are the sticks I am using. I have run them up to DDR2 1050 @ 5-5-5-15 with 2.3v (benching) but my daily is DDR2 900 4-4-4-12 @ 2.15v.
Nice sticks for $50 IMO. Been using these for over a year now.

The 4 gig kit of G.Skills came back in stock, and I ordered em! Nice price + 10 dollar promo code. Can't wait to play with them! Should be a nice upgrade.
What chips does 4GB Gskill uses? Does it overclock well to lets say 533FSB 1:1 @ 4-4-4-12?

Strange, maybe i was lucky with my ballistix, been over almost 10months after building my system and I have this overclocked from the beginning.. Haven't had any problems, "Knock on wood".
I would also suggest GskiLL
I'm happy with my Ballistix Tracers too and have been running 502FSB 1:1 4-4-4-12 @ 2.16V withouht problems. Of course, I have fans blowing on top of it as they are really hot and I mean, HOT! :D
